      Please help with T56 problem

      Hello,
I'm having a problem with my LS1 T56 and was hoping to get any of your opinions on it. Well here's what's going on. Everything works great on it except for second gear. It is really hard to get it to fully engage second unless your really hold in in there. Once it's here it doesn't come out but you have to hold it other wise it grids or just doesn't go it at all.
I then called the local trans shop and they said it was probably just the syncros or possibly the gear. I asked them about how much it would cost to fix it. The owner told me around 50 for them to inspect it and no more than 800 to fix it. So I drop it off for them to look at it. They say they'll get back to me it 2 or three days to let me know.
Well a week goes by and I haven't heard from them so I call them. All of a sudden the inspection is up to 140 and they tell me the whold thing is trashed and needs a complete rebuild at 2700 or I could buy a reman one for 2800. I feel like they are trying to take advantage of me because I'm young and they don't think I know anything.
Is my trans really trashed and needs to be rebuilt? and what about those prices?

Sorry about this being so long but I don't have a whole lot of money and I don't want to get ripped off. Thanks for you help.

      Thanks,
      Ryan

I sell new units for $2425.00 so I think you might be getting hosed, and as Jason said remaned units go for right at $1600.00. It is always a good idea to shop around. [email protected]

You are getting hosed at that price unless it includes removal and installation and then at a stock rebuild it is still high.

I just had my LS1 T56 rebuilt by t56rebuilds.com which included replacing 2 gears and a slider (not normally replaced in a rebuild) as well as upgrading the shift forks, syncros (blocker plates really) and billet keys. All for $1500. Take $2-300 off that or so for the gears and slider. Tranny feels great now (1400 miles on it).

I found a local place that was a bit cheaper but I figured I would send it to the guys that specialize in T56's rather than the local tranny place.

I have to second t56rebuilds!!! I just sent my tranny there and they are top notch when it comes to information and customer service.
I sent them my CTS-V transmission and they tore it all apart, installed a new output shaft, new 4th & reverse, new tailhousing, bronse fork pads & billit sliders and had it back to me in a week (that includes 2-days for shipping both ways!!!) I also bet they will come in way under the cost you were quoted!!
