Locating a ROUGH Camaro. Any tips?

Back in the day, finding a beat up first gen Camaro was easy. I purchased a '68 RS for $150 in 1986 to strip off parts and left the carcus behind. I wish I had that car today.

I can't seem to find a really, really rough car. Any cars that are, and someone advertises, are SS 396 cars or somthing that are valued because of their trim tag. Or, I find a number of abandoned projects where they have done a number of things to the car (Like new floors or added factory style disc brakes, etc.) that I am going to rip out anyway. I just need a Camaro "shell" with a VIN so I can get it titled as a street car...and have the basic outline of the car to work with. A six-cylinder coupe with no floors would be perfect. I don't want to hack up a rare car that has a chance to restored to factory specs wither.

Does anyone have any "junkyard dog" hunting tips? Looking online is not working at all. And asking at local websites if anyone knows of a car in a field or sitting behind a garage have come up empty.

Finally, if anyone DOES happen to know of 67-68 Camaro in the midwest that basically has a roof and most of the door jams (And a legit VIN), let me know!

PM VintageRacer here (Mike Strinich). He has a couple of boneyard dogs. Very rough, but do have vins and trim tags. He is out of pocket but I will be seeing him in the next couple days.

I think my reaction to the money being asked for that car was similar to the posters there. But, that car would be a good candidate for what I am wanting to do because it has been hacked up. I wonder what the brakes and wiring harness could be eBayed for. I kind of doubt the quarter panels are healthy, but if they were, there might be a deal that could be worked out on something like that.

As little as possible! Since I am looking for a very rough car, and a 6-cyl/base car trim tag, if any trim tag, I am hoping I can find something cheap. That is basically a VIN, A-pillars, rear seat interior metal, maybe a decent tail light panel. I don't need a front clip, subframes, any interior, no floors, just something I can hang new metal on. A solid roof would be nice.

If someone had quarters installed, obviously I would pay for that. If they had a nice front clip, I'd pay for that...so, you can see the price starts going up quite a bit. But, I think I would feel best starting with the basic structure and not taking any chances with someone elses abandoned project. But, I'm open...so, we'll see.

This car sold on eBay for $861. It's sitting on a trailer axle. I would buy this car, maybe even for this amount locally, but this car did not have a VIN. So, that wouldn't work for me.

This car sold for $1276 and is a real RS/SS WITH a VIN, trim tag

I would buy a car like that, but in this case, you are paying for the RS/SS. That has little impact on me as my car will not be "restored". Although, it might help sell the car later, even everything underneath it was modern. But, I feel a bit guilty about cutting up a car that has a desirable heritage.

Nashville is a bit far away and I would have to take that into consideration as a part of what I pay for a car. I may consider going that far away if I get desperate though! I am hoping I can find something that is just a day trip. Pulling a trailer that far both ways and having to take time off from work may off-set any money saved.

Cars Online is a good place to look.

These are alittle more than $1K but you could always sell off parts:

This one is a convertible; only reason I listed it

Where are you located? I know of a 67 "carcass" sitting in a junkyard in SW Ohio. I've no idea what they want for it nor do I remember it's exact condition. It was similar to but rougher than the red 68 picture you posted though. I don't recall it having any glass.

      This one?

This car doesn't seem bad, but it's one of those cases where someone put a floor in it already, and I will be cutting that out.

I think I may just have to drive around out in the country and try and find one in a field.

Finding rough Camaros in NY is easy. We're surrounded by cars that are little more than rust held together by bondo. The hard part is explaining to the sellers that the cars are not worth $17,000.00

I hear ya. I saw someone posted something at Yahoo about being "given" a rusty, rusty 6-cyl. Camaro. His question was "Is it worth fixing up?". It appeared to me he was not a "car guy" and had no concept of what it took to restore a car. Well, it got worse as people piped in and said, "Did you see Barrett-Jackson? That car will be worth $50K easy with a little work, a 350 and some paint.!!!!!"

Yeah, that's true if he puts $60K into it or 1000 hours of his own skilled labor, which he did not appear to have. If it was a 375/396 car, different story. I emailed him with a plea to just let it go. No repsonse.

BTW, I updated my profile for those sending me PMs with leads on shells. I would prefer one within a few hours of KC if possible.

I was high bidder on this car for a while:

      http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...4893269&rd=1,1

But again, since it is a real RS/SS, it's really not suitable for me....and will be too pricey when the auction ends.

I do like the fact that he has a title in-hand for it.

Here is another example. This particular car is just too rusty around the windows and in the cowl for me. I wonder if it was exposed to sea air or something.

      http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/67-ca...QQcmdZViewItem

I keep finding projects where they have replaced the floors and/or rebuilt the subframes/suspensions....which is what I don't want. I'm going to have to start looking for cars that are NOT for sale/barn or field finds.

Does ummm. PRRC or Prodigy....I think it was Prodigy/Frank still have that 68 for sale?

It seemed like a really good deal for someone who needed a good solid blank canvas. And, we know the car has a solid foundation.

I remember seeing a picture of it rolled outside of a shop.....might have been in primer grey with new panels.

I nkow of one in central NJ at buddys place. They where going to give it to me for free, but I'm sure you can get it cheap. I know that I'll prob never get to it in the next 5 years at least and I have the nova now. Its a 6cyl car with no floors and needs all new sheetmetal, basically a inner shell. But cheap. The subframe is not attached and everything is inside the car. They also have some new sheetmetal to go with it. PM if your interested and I'll give a phone number. Here are some pics I snapped the last time I was there.

Hey, I remember you from when I was active at Corral.net ! I was KCCobra over there if that rings a bell. Your price sounds great, but it is a classic example of a car that is too nice for what I am doing. I don't need floors, including trunk, or inner wheel wells. That adds a lot of value and rightfully so.
