      California Smog Again

Thought some of you may want to see this:

      URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

California Introduces Bill to Require ANNUAL Emissions Tests
for Vehicles 15-Years Old and Older

Here we go again! Legislation (A.B. 616) has been introduced in the
California Assembly by Assemblyman Dave Jones
<mailto:%[email protected]> to require annual Smog
check inspections for vehicles 15-years old and older. The bill would
also require that funds generated through the additional inspection fees
be deposited into an account which can be used to scrap older cars. You
may recall that in 2004 a new law was enacted in California to require
the lifetime testing of all 1976 and newer model-year vehicles.
Pre-1976 motor vehicles would remain exempt under A.B. 616. The bill
has been referred to the Assembly Transportation Committee.

We Urge You to Contact Assemblyman Jones and members of the Assembly
Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Oppose A.B. 616

      * A.B. 616 ignores the minimal impact vintage cars have on air
      quality.
      * A.B. 616 could entice vintage car owners into allowing these
      vehicles to be scrapped.
      * A.B. 616 ignores the fact that vehicles 15-years old and older
still constitute a small portion of the overall vehicle population and
are a poor source from which to look for emissions reduction.
      * A.B. 616 ignores the fact that classic vehicles are
      overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently driven.
      * A.B. 616 would increase costs by creating an annual inspection
fee for owners of these vehicles.
      * A.B. 616 represents another attempt by California legislators
and regulators to scapegoat older cars.

Please contact members of the California Assembly Transportation
Committee immediately by phone, fax or e-mail to request their
      opposition to A.B. 616.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to [email protected]. Thank you for
      your assistance.

Once again these clowns that probably have nothing to do with the collection or restoration of classic cars want to dictate what we do with them. The sad thing is most of these cars are better taken care of then most newer vehicles on the road today.

      Thanks Tony...
According to a post by Mkelcy on Camaros.net:

      (1) Every motorcycle, and every diesel-powered vehicle, until the epartment, pursuant to Section 44012, implements test procedures applicable to motorcycles or to diesel-powered vehicles, or both.
      (2) Any motor vehicle that has been issued a certificate of compliance or noncompliance or a repair cost waiver upon a change of ownership or initial registration in this state during the preceding six months.
      (3) Any motor vehicle manufactured prior to the 1976 model-year.
      (4) (A) Except as provided in subparagraph (B), any motor vehicle four or less model-years old."
So it sounds like pre-1976 cars are exempt. If anyone finds something contrary, please post...

won't affect our cars but will add a ton of money to the state and smog stations as millions of cars from 1976 to 1992 (at this point) would have to pay to be tested once per year. You can bet the State will do as much as possible to get this one on the books.

Classic cars are labeled as 20 years or older. At least make it apply only to 19 years and newer. How many friggin cars from 76 are still on the road anyway?!

And if you're serious about smog stop giving credits allowing companies to pollute for cars that would have been sitting in the scrap yard anyway.

      What a bunch of yahoos.

As a native from SoCal myself... its all good... Im just giving you the same.

Im glad not to worry about smog because of owning a '67. Thankfully, before I left Cali '67 was exempt... and when I got to Nevada... I found that '67 was the last year for exemptions. Now did I luck out or what ??
