ABS Light, How can I Over Ride?

I put a complete 1999 Camaro wiring harness in my 67 Camaro. I am not running the Anti Lock Brakes. I did not install the Electronic Brake/Traction Control Module (EBTCM). If I am reading the schematic properly their is a data link wire that connects the EBTCM to the gage cluster. What type of data is sent over this wire? Can I find a way to fake out the gage cluster and shut off the ABS light? Thanks for the help. Randy

      Randy,

I just looked at the prints and with all the information on the Class 2 data line I don't see a way to fake it out. The easy route is to just remove the bulb.

Thanks Matt. I think the gage cluster is LED. I have not taken it apart to see if I can do that. I think the ABS trouble is also turning the BRAKE light on. I was hopping to be able to keep the Brake light for the E-Brake, low fluid in master,.. ect. Thanks again Randy

Reminds me of the time we sat at the gate in an arplane for quite a while...after we pushed off from the gate someone asked the stewardess why it took so long, and she said "they found something wrong with the plane and it took that long to find a replacement crew"

      Randy,

I did some research over at ls1tech, and it looks like after the 98 model the class 2 data was added. According to sources the bcm controls and stores the abs codes. The only way I can think of to cure your problem is to remove the abs led from your cluster and see if there is a way to run switched ign power to the brake light as a stand alone warning system. ( no bcm involvement )

I have been working on modifying a 4th gen harness for my car over the last few weeks and have been pouring over theses wiring prints. I made it hard on myself by merging a 98 body harness, 01 engine, and 00 underhood. I'm not using the instrument panel, but will retain the bcm and certian functions, as well as the DRL module.

How much stuff did you need to rework to integrate the body harness to the engine harness. I have a 98 formula body harness, 98 camaro under hood harness and 99 engine harness that I want to use in my car I have a 4th gen Ls1 dash and gage cluster from an unknown year I plane to run everything except for the abs. I have been told that 98 use analog data for the gages and latter years use digital data. I haven’t really looked at any wiring diagrams yet. Do you have any suggestion or incite on what I should do.

Thanks for the follow up and help. My last try before I just cut out the LEDs will be to call the people at Auto-Tap. I use one of their units to hook my car to the lap top. They are able to read the info so maybe they can help me build something do duplicate it. Thanks Again Randy

Call John Spears at www.speartech.com. I am sure he can help you get around this. Maybe a reprogram to remove ABS?

I did a complete rework, so I can fit it in my 69 as if it was made for it. I opened up all the harness's and removed what was not needed, then rerouted many wires. I went as far as repining and consolidating connectors to a cleaner install, while sticking with factory wire colors. I labeled all the wires with heatshrink for all the different circuits. The car has an ididit column and VA heater, which will tap into the correct circuit wiring, I'll post up some pics up soon. This has become a much bigger job than I originally planned, but the wiring is your base to build function and comfort. ie. modern convenience and reliability.

First I would try and find out the year of the dash, if it turns out to be a 98 your in luck. If not you will have to get the pinout for the 99 + gauge cluster connector and rewire it. The 99 engine to the 98 body harness may need slight changes also. Pm me your email and I can send you the wiring info I have. The pinouts I have are for a 98 and I received them from another member on ls1tech, they made my job much easier. There is a wealth of information at that forum, and the guys in the hybrid section are very helpfull.

I have a full set of GM manuals for the 99. I can help if you need info.
Thanks for all the help, I will try calling Speartech.
The 99 Camaro uses two separate bulbs for the brake and signal lights. I have designed a way to get to single lamp brake, turn signal. I should have it finished by the weekend if any one else needs it.

Wow, I have a 99 Z28 to strip and plan to do much of the same for my 67, including the DRLS, courtesy lights, cruise, etc. I spent 2 days just lightly reading the manuals (I got a whole set off ebay for $50-what a buy). So much more involved then 'back in the day'. I figure it'll take me a year to work it all out. I didn't think anyone else would do this. I have so much to learn....

No, y'all definitely aren't alone: my El Camino is getting a 2000 Camaro wiring harness -- I plan on integrating everything, including VATS.

I left VATS enabled also, but with the ididit column I'm not sure if I will be able to adapt the GM tumbler. For now I plan on just jumpering the resistance input with the correct value. I have kicked around the idea of a glove box mounted aux receptacle for a one off resistor plug that can be taken with when the car is left unattended.

      Randy,

If you have the time to post up how you did your mod on the instrument panel with pics I would like to see it. But if your like me and don't have the time or remember the pics a good verbal description would be nice.

I put in the hole dash so the instrument cluster just went back into the stock mounts, or were you looking for pictures of the gages I cut in above the radio. Let me know what you are looking for and I should be able to get you pictures. Thanks Randy

Sorry that was off topic. I was referring to the tail lights. I had to convert the 2 separate bulbs to one single lamp as used on 1st gen tail lights.
I spent a few more hours on the dash lights last night. Looks like I will have to disconnect the bulbs/LEDS. When the EBCM is disconnected it turns on the ABS,Brake and service vehicle lights. I may play with modifying the EBCM at a later date to regain the use of the lights.

Thanks for the help every one.
Let me know if I can help with some of the other projects being built.

Rear light s would be easy just wire in one of the trailer adpater kits for wiring split lights to a car trasiler, something like a $10 or $15 piece.
As for vats all you need is a simple plug with the resistor to plug int oit.
I did one ofr a fella and all we did was make a dummy socket that looked like a cig lighter. its larger enough you never misplace it and if you lock it in glovebox or console you will always have it.
anotherway is a simple molex connector with 2 terminals, and simply wire in theresistors and then seal it up or something.
I did one where we used the Astrovan DRL plug, the circuit board pulls out and we simply ran it through 2 of the wires and bought a simple PC board etching kit and remade the DRL card with simple connections on it (the resistors were in line all the board did was make the cicuit complete) and all it had was a small slot in dash, which hid very well, and the circuit board had a button on it to look like it belonged on the dash but pulled out it wouldnt run and its easy to replicate. Ill try to find the pics so you will see what it does. A hidden Vats system is cool especially if it works and dont forget to keep old VIN incase you need parts.
      Good luck
      Lee
