      Question about valve cover flange

When fab'ing your own valve covers, can the flange be a flat piece? Stock covers usually curve down over the lip on the head. Is this necessary to prevent leaking, or can a flat piece be used for the flange?

The lip helps keep the gasket in place when you are bolting it on. If you use studs it probably won't matter, just be careful in the corners and ends when you tighten it down.
