Can the LS engines sound like the older SBC's? I've never liked the way any of the newer (85-ish and up) engines sound, they sound too smooth and blah to me. Some late 90's, early 00's Firebird tried to race me today and I didn't like it at all. Granted, a lot of it probably has to do with the mufflers and the rest of the exhaust, but I mean can I get it to have that nice lope to it like the good old engines?

I've seen a few Camaros and Firebirds new cams and they still didn't sound too appealing. :(

Also, something I was thinking about just now, I don't need to run catalytic converters, do I? That would probably help it sound better, imo.

I do not believe so. I've seen more than one street rod running a LS motor without them.

The main reason they don't sound the same is in the firing order which is completely different than a Gen I small block. However, in my own personal opinion the LSX's sound great and with a large cam on a small lsa you can get all the lope you want.

no, cats are an emissions only thing. The engine does require two Oxygen sensors though. Unless you run it carbed. However, I think a carbed Gen 2/3/4 is going backwards. The EFI is so much better for tuning and adjustability

Yeah, me too. That's one of the reasons I want an LS engine. My friend lives up in the mountains and every time I go up there my car runs like crap.

I noticed when I started mine for the first time that the sound is a lot sharper and harder. I ran it with open headers and it hurt my ears. My bigblock and smallblock have never hurted my ears even the ProStocks I ran in the eighties.

I think it is because the camtiming is a lot different than N/A engines have.

Even though they sound different they sound good.
