      12si acdelco vs. autolite

i wanted a reliable alternator and read through mad electrical's website. so i figured that i wanted to get the 12si with the 94 amp output and i went to kragens, and they had to special order it. they also had the autolite version of it which was 1/2 the price and had a lifetime warranty. the salesperson said that if it broke within anytime i had it, it would be replaced!

the acdelco version didnt have any type of warranty and cost up to 220. what's the difference? i opted for the autolite, i hope i'll be okay.

I did the same. Shouldn't be any problem.

Because the Delco alt with no warranty will probably last 15+years while the Kragen/Autolite alt with a lifetime warranty will be replaced 15X in the first few years....until you get pissed off enough and throw it away and go buy the Delco one. I had a Kragen alt that failed enough that I started carrying the tools to change in the glove box.

I personaly recomend using the AC Delco CSI type alternator. The favorite part number I use is a 321-411 nad the standard pulley will fit right on.
The CSI alt has digital regualtor and you can use it for a tach also if you find an adjustable tach or get a matching adapter.
I ran one of these for 12 years off and on and it ran over 150k miles total.
you can also use a CSI !33 style too. Its simply a smaller diameter case.
I HATE trying to help people that want to use 1 wire alternators. If you have a drag car go for it as you will most likely have enough idle speed to make it charge but for acar idling under 1000 rpm in traffic will not excite them enough.
I use standard plug that fits the alt. I run 12 v key on to one wire and the other is can be simply looped back to the battery terminal and use a good fuse link wire for this,
As a diag tech I have seen too many 1 wire alts and the cars always had electrical problems.
