      Daily driving insurance

Hi, for the folks on here that daily drive their calssics, how much do you pay and who is your insurer.

I plan to get a 67 or 68 camaro and use it as my DD. I guess this would go to the younger crowd. I'm 19, no tickets and have had insurance for more than a year now if that'll help.

Most agencies i look on the web dont have cars listed under 1982. I was going to get an 01 trans am, but the insurance would kill me on that. 300/month. And so i heard it isnt as bad as on an old car.

      Thanks guys.

I don't think it would be that much. I don't believe you can get classic car insurance b/c ur under 25. So it would be like insureing any regular car. Hopefully more people will help ya out.

We just went through this with Michael. He is building a daily driver 86 Monte Carlo SS that he will have more money in it then the "book" would show for it. And since Monte Carlos seem to be theft magnets around these parts, we are a bit concerned. Because he still lives at home, and because he drives all the cars, he is already covered on our Geico policy and rated to drive the highest rated (non classic) car in the house, which right now would be the WS6 Trans Am. By rating him on the highest rated car, he can drive any of the (non classic) cars.

So the book on the 86 Monte Carlo is $8K, we put a $12k "endorsment" on the policy and insured the wheels for $4K and paint and misc for $8K of that endorsment. Which means if the car is stolen, $20K, if the wheels are stolen, $4k, if he bangs it up, regualr repair cost plus custom paint dollars in percentage of the amount of car that needs to be painted. If it totals, $20K. Uninsured hits it, $20k!

To insure the Monte Carlo as just a stock SS, was going to be $600 a year, it is $1000 a year with the endosment.

Specific endorsements, nice move. I never thought of that.

1000/yr isnt bad at all really. But I think our highest rated vehicle is the Camry. Right now im driving an old buick, my sister a carolla.

But i plan to get insured on my own. So i'll be cutting away from my parents insurer(AAA). I dont plan to much to the car other than cosmetics.

I think you're going to have to use a regular insurer. All of the collector car insurers I had quote me (Grundy, Haggerty, and the like - -I use Grundy for my 2 cars) have no mileage restrictions on them but one of the contingencies is you can't drive it to work, so no 'daily drivers' for them. You can take it for a cruise or go to a car show every day, just no trips to the office. Good luck.

The problem you may run into is that while insurance companies will insure it as a daily driver rather cheaply, this is because they will give you a "stated value" policy... Because of the depreciation tables many insurers use, this means that they will only pay out a very small amount before they will deem the car "totaled."

It also depends on what state your in. If you're in Mass, bend over buddy! My wife and I pay $900 a year for 1 crap box DD, both with a clean record. But hey, that's only 2 months of parking fees in downtown boston...

Yes i heard i'd have to get an agreed value, rather than a stated, but that most ins companies dont do that?

I did a ton of looking and you are not going to find an agreed value policy for a daily driven vehicle. Sadly, agreed value is about the only policy that in the case of a severe claim will pay you what your car is worth.

I am switching to AAA for the exact reason that they will allow an endorsement on the Camaro providing the underwriters agree based on an appraisal of the car. Nobody else I found would do that.

This is good to hear. More details on your endorsement would be great.

None of the "collector insurance" guys will write a policy for a daily driver, that is not what they are about. You can put 50K miles a year on your car with them but you better be able to prove those miles were going to a show, power tour, club meeting or something. They just don't want to insure cars that are DDs. Too much exposure is what they told me when I asked the question.

I have never heard of an Insurance Co never mind Geico insuring individual parts. You have to remember just because you put $10k in parts on a $8k it doesn't mean it is now a $18k car. I think anyone on this board nows this. They can simply get quotes of like kind equipped vehicles in your area and use them to establish a value.

What the adjuster will do is add a percentage to the total ACV of the car. If an individual part is stolen adjusters aren't stupid and will not pay list price. They will do exactly what anybody else will do which is get the best quote deal on a replacement part. Also remember big Co's like Geico get huge discounts by MFG's and dealers that want their business. So do not be surprised if you get $2k for your rims and a number where they located them.

Also remember the person selling the policy isn't the person settling the claim. I would love to see that written in a policy. Not saying it is impossible but not too common place especially for Geico. This is from a Co that pays 1/2 of what State Farm pays for labor.

So your policy uses the specific words "agreed value" or "stated value?"
