I have a '69 with 17x9.5" all the way around. Plenty of clearance in the back and front both. 17x11 would be tight, but possibly do-able with the proper backspacing. Check out my site in my sig for more pics...

Here's the rear wheels, with 275/40/17 Mickey Thompson's mounted. You can see plenty of clearance with the fender wells.

I will have to find the pic's, but I had a 17x10, 5.5" BS, 295/40/17 tire on the rear of my '70, plenty of room. I know if you look at the 315's that were on the Redline Chevelle, they rubbed, especially under hard cornering. Without doing anything to the rear wheelwells, a 295 is as big as you want to go and feel very comfortable you will not wreck the tire or the car.

17 x 9.5 and 17 x 11 here on my '69... plenty of room. Running 255/45 and 285/40 tires at the moment, I'll switch to 275/40 and 315/35 at the next tire change although I will have to roll the quarter lips for the 315's. Right now my rear quarters have the lips and wheelwell trim intact, 315's would fit as-is but have 1/8" of clearance with no load and would definitely rub in a turn.

Thanks for the help so far. What kind of B/S are you guys running with the 17x9.5 The prob I'm having it I like my wheel to look deep but still stay under the fender wells. I have 15x10 with 5.5 on my 69 drag car so I may see if I can have a set of Torque thrust II made in 17x10 with a 5.5 B/S I just hate on having to wait that long.

Here is a pretty good looking ride with 17X9.5 and 17X11 combo. Tires were 255/40 and 275/40 though 275/315's were run for a while. 315's WILL RUB if the rear is lowered down to the top of the tire. There is no way to make them fit inside the wells without sheetmetal surgery.

Chevelleman, I live in Durham. I get down to the coast a couple times a year though.

As for BS, I run 5.5" backspacing on my 17x9.5s

With a 17x9.5 front wheel,I wouldn't run less than 5.5" backspace. My 17x9 fronts (5" backspace) with 275/40/17 Kumhos are a really snug fit. 5.25" or 5.5" would be much better.

BadVelle, could you post some side photos of your car so we can see the ride height? There's no way my 17x9's would fit with 4.5" backspace,at my car's ride height. It would have to be raised a bunch. BTW,who makes a 295/40/17 tire?

70-72 A-bodies seem to have more rounded wheelwells and can easier accomodate a 17x11 wheel w/315 tire. I've seen quite a few of those cars with that combo, without any mods at all. 68-69's can manage it too with precise backspacing, though.

You need a wider wheel to run a 315. A 9.5" width is too narrow. A 285 is about tops. As for the fronts, just curious why you want such a narrow wheel?

I just like the look better. I have never been a fan of a wide rim on the front of a Chevelle. I know a 315 will work as I have used them on a 9.5 vette wheel. It looked about right to me the tire stuck out past the rim more than a 275 40 which is the look I want.

315 on a 9.5" wheel is pushing to the dangerous limits is it not?

315 on a 9.5 wheel is a little wide. 285 should be the limit.

      315's

I don't think any tire manufacturer will tell you it's ok to run a 315 on that narrow of a rim. Read the tire specs online. 315's fit best on an 11" rim.

a few f-body guys have run 315s on their stock 17x9.5s. The most common complaints are irregular tire wear and squirmy handling. Alot of concern about losing a bead, but I haven't heard of it actually happening.
