Differences between the LS1 and LS2?

Just wondering. I'd like to get an LS 364/440 from Summit, but it's just too much. I could get an LS1 and T56 for half that. So basically, what (if any) are the differences between the LS1 and LS2 blocks?

The LS2 block has a larger bore, so it's what most performance engine builders are using for LSX stroker motors. The main advantages of the LS2 over the LS1 are the larger bore (and 18 cubic inches) and the better flowing LS6 style cylinder heads. I'd say get a low mileage LS1 and T56 and throw a cam and some cylinder head upgrades at it. You'll have no problem beating that 440 hp mark, even with a mild cam. Also, try to get an '01 or newer LS1 since they came from the factory with the better-flowing LS6 intake manifold. Hope this helps,

So the block dimensions and accessory bolt holes are the same? I want to eventually bore it out to a 383 anyway, so it would probably be better to just find a used LS1.

      Thanks,

Well there's a few that are around $1500-2000, but they're the older ones without the LS6 intake. There's even some for $3000. I'm still gonna see if the local wrecking yard has any.

You will probably be looking at $4000+ range for a good, low mileage LS1 and T56. You can get them with the 4L60E for quite a bit cheaper, since they are not as desirable as the 6 speeds.

I'm sure you could find one with a T56 that will fit your budget, but it's going to be an older motor with some mileage. It was worth a little extra $$$ for me to get a newer, low mileage unit.

And to answer your question, the LS1 and LS2 are almost identical and most parts are interchangable between the two.
