      Holley Commander 950 MPFI

I've run across a guy that has a Holley Commander 950 MPFI system available for sale. It's used and the only part number he can find is 200R514-1A. I looked this part number up on Summit, but all I come up with is this, and it isn't a lot of help:

      http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

For those of you that own those systems, are there any part numbers on the intake, throttle body, injectors that will help me determine the actual 950 MPFI kit he has? The guy that has it knows little about FI and even less about the 950 Commander systems.

      Thanks!

Dan I think the biggest differences in recent years is more the software/firmware in the controller. About 2 years ago they have a newer easier to use Pro(I think that's the name) software. They even have a wide band upgrade, or you can hook your LM-1 to it per some others here.

I Second that motion. Doug is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the Commander 950.

Hi, I'll help you here .

The ECU might or might now have the firware version marked on the back. Version 1.x is old stuff, 3.x is the Pro and should be marked on the back.

The injectors should have the size lazer engraved on them, 24, 42 etc.

Other than the injectors and in rare cases the MAP sensor, all kits should be the same. I'm assuming he's showing you pictures to see what intake it has.

      Nice Nova btw!

Got one myself except it just likes to go straight!

Cool, thanks Doug! I'll see if I can get some additional pics to see exactly what he has. If the firmware is 1.x, can it be upgraded w/o buying another ECU?

You can get a firmware upgrade for less than $100.

So Doug if I use my old TBI Commander 950 and for multi port I know it wil need a firmware upgrade-new in box but several years old. I hear there is a newer cheaper wide band upgrade(using the Bosch sensor most wide bands do now) how much easier does that make the tuning? Can the TBI pods be taken off and use the TBI for just a plain TB? Looks like they just bolt on.

After playing with a wide band and carbs sometimes there is only so much you can do to tune all the circuits.

THe ECU's are all the same other than firmware which is upgradeable. They are configurable in the software for TBI, MPFI, ignition, etc.

To use a wideband, you need the 3.x Pro software and firmware.

534-197 is a new wideband kit that comes with a LSU4 Bosch sensor which is fine other than leaded fuel and very high EGT applications seen in extreme turbo use. This kit also comes with the upgrade certificate for the PRO so all you need is it. I think it is about $350 at Jegs. I think Summit has the price messed up and is a lot more.

Once you use a wideband, you can't/won't go back. Make tuning a piece of cake and you can run closed loop at any A/F ratio, unlike a narrow band O2 where you are pretty much stuck around 14.7:1. Best money you can spend.

Sure, you can use the TBI for an air valve. I have two 700 CFM Holley TBI's (minus injector pods) as air valves on an EFI tunnel ram on the 491 in my Nova.

PLEASE post pics, specs, anything else you want for the dual quad configuration!! I've been wanting to do a TB dual quad for a long time, but the EFI stuff intimidates me.

I'm trying to figure out how to mount injectors and rails underneath in the valley area of my Mickey Thompson cross ram!

      Doug,

      Thanks for coming in.

Just to clairify, if I found for cheap a TBI setup, had the firmware/software upgraded, dummied/removed the TBI injectors, modified the intake for an MPFI setup, it would work? That opens a wealth of opportunities since the killer for piecing a system together is the cost of the aftermarket carb-type throttle body.

Doug's tunnel ram setup is sweet. He started with a Weiand tunnel ram. Used 2 of the smaller TBI throttle bodies with the injectors removed. Modified the intake for injector bungs and fuel rails. Looks slick.

I'll try to post a link to a pic since I'm too computer dumb or don't have a pic hosing site.

I've had EFI on my Nova with 2 different ECU's for about 14 years now. I ain't rich so I make everything myself!

My first unit was a single plane with JB welded bungs with a Qjet for an air valve. I added an IAC and TPS to it.

You can do just about anything you want. You just need a TPS, MAP, and coolant/air temp sensors (and O2 sensor).

Here's a link to a picture. Still needed to tidy up the wiring etc..

I took about 1" off the base and upper to try to get it under a 4" cowl. I don't think it quite make it, so right now it's old school poking through the hood. It's a fair weather drive it to the track every week car anyhow.

If the track wasn't 10 miles away, I was going to ProT it, since I am fully into using your car, but for now it is drag racing.

I used to autocross it in college all the time with a small block. People lined up for a ride since it never went straight!
