      paint stripping

      anyone know a good way to strip a body? i have a single stage air compressor and a cheep sand blaster, but its taking forever. its like my air compressor wont keep up. anybody ever use chemical strippers? i have about 8 hours invested in blasting and only got the firewall done. now what i already sandblasted, is starting to rust again.. please help

      I feel your pain man.
      I went through the exact same thing just in the past few months.

      Basically, it's a slow job no matter how you look at it.

      I used mostly a 6" orbital sander and a couple dozen sanding papers. I also used a bit of chemical stripper, sometimes more than once on a panel to get through multiple layers of paint.

      I now forget how many nights I sanded a panel down, and then later resanded the surface rust because I wasn't ready for primer yet for the whole car. (3-4 times?)
      It was well over 30 hrs just from the firewall back. And thats with EPD stuff on the full quarters. (which I did take off)

      Eventually, I succumbed to reality and did a sand/primer on the roof, then several days later did the left side of the car, then later a sand/primer on the right side and trunk/rear.

      Time is elusive for me.

      Chemical stripping has been a tedious process in my experience. I stripped my firewall and inner fender liners with aircraft stripper. It took 4 or 5 coats of stripper to clean the firewall up completely; I'm on coat number 3 with the inner fender liners, and they don't look a ton better than they did to begin with. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what.

      I thought about brushing the stuff on, letting it dry, and then sanding on it. I have no idea if that would be faster/easier than just trying to brush stripper on and scrape it off.

      If you are stripping via a mechanical process (sanding) is there a quicky primer that you can hit the panels with that will prevent surface rust and NOT bugger up future efforts from the paint-dude?

      Just go buy a couple of rattle cans of primer. Your going to sand it off again anyways you just need something to keep the rust from forming.

      But get the car in Epoxy as fast as you can...

      finally some progress, but not much

      i finallly got my firewall sand blasted , it took me about a week everyday after work, i put black epoxy primer on it, and it looks like new, but its taking forever!!!!!
