      Rear end noise ????

I've put about 100 miles on the car so far. I have been babying it a bit, just to shake down the loose ends, but I've had a few good on ramp romps, and it feels pretty strong.
I started hearing a clunk when I take off from a stop, that I don't remember being there before. I jacked up the rear of the car and looked it all over for loose parts. the only thing I could find was the rearend makes a little clack clack noise, when I turn the drivers side wheel forward and backward, and it has about 1/8" - 1/4" free play, before the other wheel moves. The passenger side wheel has about the same free play, but the noise is much quieter, more of a deep thud.
The rearend is a Fab 9. with new Strange 31 spline SS axles, and new bearings. the third member is a stock Ford 9" with Ford 411 gears and a Trac-loc limited slip, I bought it used, but it looks like new inside and out.
I had a new IE driveline 1350 yoke installed by a local rearend shop, and he said the 3rd member looked like new, and was in excellent shape.
So, is this amount of free play(slop) and noise normal??

      Thanks,

      Steve N

      Normal
could be spring slap, a bushin in the leaf or shackle, or shock bushing, or the yoke kissing the tunnle under axle wrap, or exhaust hitting, trans mount? a loose wheel, spring perches bent, loose front spring pocket bolts.

What about your exhaust? I had a similar "bang" after I put a new quarter on the 73 and it turned out to be the exhaust was just kissing the bottom edge of the panel under the right conditions (ie hard accel or braking). Ground off about 1/8" of the QP and it went away.

Thanks guys, glad to hear the little freeplay in the rearend is normal.
I'll have to run thru that laundry list of suspects, thanks Madspeed. Every part is new, but something could have come loose.
I had a leaf spring pad come apart, and loosen the U-bolts causing the drive shaft to hit the floor. But removing the pads all together, and bolting straight to the springs seems to have fixed that. sure is fun to finally drive the car.
      Later,
