The Cougar, Thunderbird and Mark VII shared the same platform.

We're both right. Pre-fox body, Mustang and Cougar (60's-mid 70's) were the same. Once the Mustang went on the Weight Watchers, the Capri was introduced as Mercury's version of the Mustang. The Cougar then shared platforms with the Thunderbird and Mark VII through the 80s.

That sums it quite well. It's a term that is becoming a little more mainstream.The makers of Kokanee beer have a billboard up the road from me that reads "Brewed (in the mountains) where Cougars don't wear lipstick". I actually had to explain it to my wife and one of the guys I ride to work with . Now that I think of it, my wife would have qualified as a Cougar when I first met her.
