      SBC Cam Install

I'd like to install a cam into a 327 small block, but this will be my first time, so I have a whole bunch of questions. I've installed the intake and carb on my engine, replaced a pushrod before, and installed an MSD ignition system, but that is my extent of engine work. I have a 69 camaro, so I know I can install the cam without pulling the engine. My first question is, what are the best parts to upgrade during the cam install that don't need the heads to be removed? Second, how do I keep the cam from having the wrong timing? In other words, is there a way to install the cam so that it will automatically be at zero? If someone has a link to a good tutorial, that would be very beneficial as well. What are all the parts that have to be removed to get the cam out?

I'll probably have some more questions, but that will cover it for now. Thanks in advance guys!

Well start with cam timing.before you install the cam but the timing gear on it then when you install it align the 2 dots on each gear.

also before you take anything apart, pull the 1 spark plug and have someone crank it till it blows your finger out(put your finger in the plug hole) that will but 1 on tdc.

      Parts to replace.
      lifters
      push rods
valve springs (can be done with heads on motor)
seals(now is a good time with the springs off)
      locks,retainers

      parts to remove
      intake
      carb
      dist
      radiator
      water pump
      front cover
      all pulleys
      harmonic balancer
will have to drop the oil pan down,(i would take all the bolts out let hang and but a gasket on it)

      to do valve springs.
      pull headers
      valve covers
      all plugs
will need a air comp to fill the cylinders with air to remove valve springs

it a lot of work,if you are doing your first get help or have someone do it.

then do the 1st a typed.

Also, I'd recommend using GM EOS (engine oil supplement) additive and make sure to put plenty of break-in lube on the lifter faces and the camshaft. You may want to run Rotella 40-weight diesel oil for the first break-in as well, since there are additives in those oils that are vital to cam life. I know a few guys from other boards that found out about this AFTER they wiped a cam lobe.
