1980 Chevy Monza Spyder

Well, its not in as bad of shape as the crummy photos make it look. Any ideas from anybody. It has zero rust, and it is complete. I pulled off the door panels, and found the sheet that shows all of the specs from the manufacturer. Pretty cool. Currently it has the Iron Duke four banger, and a saginaw 4 speed. It does currently run with an occasional carb backfire, but nobodys perfect! I have looked at the monza/vega sites, I am curious on opinions from here. Photo shop dudes?

Damn is true. Get the biggest goofiest body kit you can find. Fenders should be stretched ATLEAST a foot and half. The rear wing should have ATLEAST two elements and be ATLEAST a foot over the roof line. Do a search for "super modifieds" to get in the spritit of things. Bitching car w/ a ton of potential. Give it hell.

My cousin is building one right now, road race fenders and all. It's got Corvette IRS out back, tubular control arms, a built LS1, 6-speed, Wilwoods, the works. Pretty cool car. He's had a soft spot for Monzas since owning one back in the day.

I was thinking more of the IMSA roadrace verison rather than the dirt-track modified style.

The IMSA stuff it too tasteful. The ones that turn my crank came from the massive failure known as "superspeedway modifieds". It was NASCAR's attempt at getting the good old boys out of the woods and on to the big ovals. They ended up looking like a cross between the dirt track and the IMSA style. A guy in NH has one that he takes out to the vintage road races. it's pretty wild. Don't get me wrong, the DeKon monzas are pure sex, I just like the stuff that's a little rougher around the edges. http://www.geocities.com/monzaman_gt/vintage2day.html

Too bad to hear about your cousin. I think he got that recipe from the "pro-touring first gen camaro" cook book. A REAL monza would have a BB chevy, chrysler torsion bar front end and monoleafs in the back. Don't worry about handling, the 12" slicks will take care of that.

The "Dekon Monzas" from the 70's were very fast. Jim Malone from Chattanooga Tn. races one with us in HSR. They are a force to recon with as they had LOTS of power and handled very good!

I can imagine pulling up to a kid in a Honda with that car in full IMSA gear. They would be like, "what the he**"! Most of the web pages about these cars seem to be based on drag cars, although they were mentioned in the GM Pro touring book. I wonder how hard it would be to use every day suspension components on it, like f body stuff. I dream in a world where everything is possible. You kinda wonder what ever happened to all those old racers. Rumor has it that there are all sorts of hop up parts for the 2.5 that is in it. I have a small block on a stand that needs a home too.Keep the ideas coming!! Thank you all.
