Rear end questions

I have searched and searched and read and read, yet I still don't know sh*t.

I don't know what to do for the rear end on my 79 TA. I have a 10 bolt with 3.73s. I want to push 600 + hp and toque thru this yet don't know if I need stronger axels, c clip eliminators, a 9 inch or what. Also planning on running around a 295 rear tires, and don't know about narrowing the rear ind so they'll tuck under the car - - -
Anyone . . .bueller . . .

Any help would be killer!

the 8.5 in that car is a fairly strong rear. with street tires it will hold up ok. but definetly look at a c-clip eliminater. or if you narrow it just have . housing ends put that use as press on style brgs. strange eng. has them . and you can still use your original brakes.

Dont even consider c-clip eliminator's....... bad news.

If you are going to make that much power and want to utilize the stock 10bolt housing, go to a press-on type wheel bearing and a quality axle.

My recommendation will be this. Real housing ends, real axles.... real bearings without the problems, maintence and saftey issues of c-clip eliminators.

Yeah a 9" would be the cats meow... but the costs included in that is a lot to consider. Mark Williams is the shiznit and for the money involved.... its nothing near the cost of a 9" but with near the same strength.

I have a friend who runs 295's on the rear of a second gen and there is nothing special required whasover, some fender lip rolling is nice but a 295 on a 10" wheel with about 5.75" backspacing is perfect.

Your 8.5 10 bolt is just fine, put a good 30 spline posi in it such as an Eaton, some aftermarket 30 spline axles, and a good set of gears (everyone has their own preference), a good 1350 yoke and you should be good to go. A summit rear end girdle coudln't hurt either. You can get everything done with parts for about $1,200, you might be able to find it a little cheaper

Thanks for the feedback. I am def. getting rid of the c clips. Also I think I will narrow it just a hair for looks. But its good to hear that my rearend is at least tuff enough not to tear apart.

If you are going to narrow it a little.... this is definately the way to go.

Pick up a 'solid cruch sleeve' and a 1350 yoke and youre in the money.

your going to be spending uneccesarry money on narrowing it, and getting rid of the C clip eliminators, what kind of motor do you have?

Outlaw~ You can reuse the ring and pinion, the carrier, the yoke and the housing. The housing will be straightened after they put the new housing ends on it. Droppin bearings in it is just cost effective insurance.

$700.00 vs. $2000.00 is a little cheaper...... and that is all it takes.

coony~ If one would be going to an axle with a press-on type axle bearing..... the housing ends are going to be cut offf anyway. So, no..... there isnt any unecessary money in narrowing the housing. If you are going to do anything like that, now would be the time to do it.

All~ C-clip's and c-clip eliminator's are a joke. Period.
