      Wastegate Dump

      Okay need a little advise.

Some people say it's okay to have the wastergate tube dump in like the picture below. Other say that it is better to go in at an angle to decrease

      See quote below
These guys probably know a lot more than me, and not trying to be nit picky, but in all my reading in turbo theory books they stress that, if possible, the wastegate exhaust tubes be angled to go with the flow in the main pipe not across it, to benefit from the low pressure area created by doing this.

here is a picture of another engine with similar entry

Definitely make it flow together.....oooor make an external dump so it sounds like the gates of hell are unleashing a million demons when you hit boost

It looks like you tube is just tack welded. You can easily reposiion it and go in at an angle just a little further back on the downpipe.

They say you should make the wastegate dump at least 18 inches past the turbine outlet.

      Marty,

If it were me Id put a little more angle on it. Without a huge explanation just immagine a Y pipe off of a V8 and how you would want the pipes from both sides to converge at as much of an angle as possible rather than at ~90 deg. Nothing likes to make hard turns as far as flow and in a severe case you very well could get the exh from the turbine side flowing back toward the WG which would end up being a nightmare to maintain solid boost control.

We spoke to Precision Turbo and they explained to us that this is an argument that has been going back and forth for years.

He explained to us that they have wastegates on some of his TT kits dumping at a 90 degree angle only a couple inches from the turbo and they have no problems. He said it's all about packaging and trying to make it look nice.

He also agreed the further away the better if i was trying to make a big difference in the way the air exits but what i have shouldn't be a problem.

Depending on what side of the fence you are on the other issue is underhood heat created by the longer WG Dump.

Ive argued this same subject before as well and I recommend the angled approach as thats the way I would do it....but then again whos to say Im correct LOL. Im sure packaging as well as looks play a big part in how one goes about connecting the WG to the DP and from what I gather from the info PTE gave you it seems to be the case of do what fits/looks good/works for you.

Corky Bell, turbo guru. In his book he talks about the benefit of not bringing the waste dump back into the exhaust track. The turbine side of the turbo is very sensitive to flow or blockage issues on the exhaust side.

I'm sorry that other people have told you that it doesn't make a difference. But if your concerned about performance and not just looks, Get the waste dump completely separate or downstream as much as possible and angled to not disrupt the turbo exhaust flow.

I agree. I was told the 18" rule also. Mine is 19"s from the turbine outlet, and also hidden very well.

Do you have room to run the dump straight to the down pipe where it turns down instead of turning it up right after the turbo? Less angles will create less stress on the stainless as it expands.

Just dump it into the atmosphere! Sounds wicked, then when u get tired with it ( If that ever happens) dump it back into the exhaust

I think this particular design is for a turbo with an internal wastegate...

Regarding the distance and angle from the turbo it seems that you will be making so much power that the net effect from how you currently have it tacked together would be negligible.

I agree with all of the above comments. In the end it came down to packaging. We are willing to sacrifice a little power for it to look better.

ps -thanks again for all of the comments.
