Hydraboost or Rear Disc - Best bang for the buck?
Hello all,
Entering the planning stages of the restoration/modification of my 67 Camaro and in looking at all the parts that are out there, I have discovered I could easily spend myself into an early divorce if left to my own devices. To avoid the perils of alimony and child support, I am trying to figure out what parts will best meet my end goal of creating a car that is safe and fun to drive. Think solid weekend warrior... I don't have to have the best of everything to road race, and I am not interested in just putting on speed parts that look good for car shows (though I want it to look good as well).
Here is what I am thinking of as my starting point for the suspension/brakes:
AFX spindles - to reduce bumpsteer
Classic Touring C5 front brakes to replace the stock drums.
I was originally thinking of doing the DSE Coilover Kit using the stock a-arms, but based on some of the comments I have read about the difficulty in adjusting the coil overs after installation, I think I am looking to move in a different direction... Once the ATS suspension system comes out, I may go that route on the A-Arms, and depending on the price, I might get the whole system.
So far, I think the parts I have chosen represent a good bang for the buck, and the parts come from companies with sterling reputations. Honestly, I would prefer to hold off on coil overs and tubular a-arms, but I would probably end up doing them down the line anyway, so I might as well pony up the bucks while the frame is out of the car. If the setup I am planning seems out of whack for the goals I have set out, somebody feel free to speak up.
Now I am down to some of the next items on my wish list.
Hydraboost set up
C5 Rear brakes from Classic Touring
I have heard very good things about the hydraboost set up. Even folks who had good vacuum have said it made a world of difference in their ability to haul a car down from speed easily. At the same time, a qualityset of rear disc brakes with an emergency brake set up would be nice as well - not to mention it would look a lot better behind a set of 17 or 18 inch wheels than a set of 9.5 inch drums! But do rear discs really add that much whoa power? Each costs around $650 to $750, so If I could do one or the other, what do you recommend? My initial inclination is to do the hydraboost first and work on the rear end at a later date, but as long as I have a group of experts to poll, I figure I will throw it out there for consideration.
Thanks,
Greg
