      Trans guys-Need help!

This questions applies to my 2001 truck, but I figured with all the knowledgable folks here maybe I can get some help.

This truck is an ext cab 1/2 ton that was the forerunner to the chevy ss. It has the 6.0 engine and the 4l65e trans, and is awd. I have used it both for a tow vehicle, a little road racing and at the drags. I have a turbo setup on it that makes in the area of 800 horses. Trans #4 just let go last night on the way home making a 3 hour trip into a 6 hour one.

I had hughes in Phx build the last trans, and I certainly am not bad mouthing them as they let me know upfront that 500hp was about the max for the 4l65e trans.

Part of the issue seems to be the trans getting worm via the turbo, which we have 2 different coolers on the thing and a ton of heat wrap.

I'd like to stay with the awd, as I live in snow country, but I may entertain going 2wd and use a 4l80e and quit shelling out $2000+ for trannies every 6-8 months. (I'm also entertaining the idea of getting rid of the turbo and going to just a n/a 450hp engine).

      Suggestions??? Thx!!

put a 4wd 4l80e in it with the matching driveshafts.

i have been running mine @ 530 with nitrous for over a year, and it is only a 4l60e. they can be built to take it.

"been running mine @ 530"-I'm not sure what you mean by "530"? If that's hp, it's about 275 ponies shy of what I'm running through this 4L65e, and I'm pretty convinced at this point they CAN'T be built to handle 800 horses in a 5300lb truck.

good point. i think 600-650 is the limit. and yes i was referring to hp. then again if you wanted to have everything cryo treated and blah, blah, blah it may work for a while. i still say upgrade to the 4l80e.

you could also use the awd case from an escalade to keep the awd.

btw - what is the repeat failure? you said it was heat, but is it the same clutch pack everytime?

it might be due to actual weight of the truck and wheels ie traction thats killing it not the bhp ?
