Like this site, it is also a good place to meet others interested in what we are, ie cars, wrenching, kniting, curling, what have you. I'm sure Andrew, Matt and myself are fine examples of excelent Myspace'ers.
I do have a gripe with myspace itself and the people that run it. They are typical of the "software culture" attitude that says that all that is on the net is fee and open and should never be subject to scrutiny, censorship or control.

Sorry, when pedophiles are using something as a tool to ply their sick craft it needs to be clamped down on. The folks at myspace have done little or nothing to help curtail that. They IMO are in some part culpable.

100% agree, also they have been way too slow to respond to all the incidents: too little, too late. It helps to be a parent to understand, once you do understand, opinions will surely change.

I also think that the people who invented the printing press are responsible for all the terrible books I've had to endure in school.

hahah interesting seeing what the "older" people think versus us younger folk.

As for the pedophelia some parents REALLY need to watch their kids, its a very common thing to get an add from a person who is "18" with virtually nude pics yet looks 14 and in their profile say they are a freshman in highschool, and how much they love sex. If you doubt me take five minutes to register and search, its BAD!

Oh and something you guys hadn't mentioned but there was a boy at my highschool who was a crossdresser, now goes by the name amelia on myspace and looks like a freakin bombshell.... funny seeing all the jock guys from other towns leaving him comments saying how hot "she" is....

Until they want to do business in China, then they'll bend over and do whatever their gov't wants.

MySpace does do a lot of filtering to try and deny underage people, not just girls, from using the site improperly. Read up on it. As a parent I fear when my girls are old enough to be using the net. I will probably have every parental control known to man and I will still be looking over their shoulder. It is not a lot different than a kid getting a fake ID and going to a club. This is just one freakin huge club by comparison. I looked around myspace once, and was not impressed. Especially when you can look for married women wanting sexual relationships. Seriously, that is a criteria you can select and get results for. I was disturbed so I left. Never been back. Myu company noe blocks MySpace. No wonder. But like many other things, MySpace does have a good side, and it far outnumbers the bad. This is exactly what AOL went through 10 years ago. They were responsible for kids wanting to be grown up and have sex. Sometimes they got caught up w/ older men.
Much of this is about how we as parnets are involved w/ our kids. Do we go home at night, turn on the babysitter (TV) and do what we want in another room? How much do we monitor the TV? Likewise the internet is the same way. Because whether it is AOL, MySpace or a web search pulls a porno site, what is placed in front of our children is what they will emulate. Time to start turning off the computers and TVs and reading to our chilren! Build the bond that will hopefully last into the troubling adolescent years.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

I couldn't have said it better myself. It seems as though alot of parents are quick to blame others, whether it is people, or products, instead of their own parenting skills.

Certainly the ultimate responsibility falls on parents, but more than a small measure of culpability must be laid on myspace for providing a tool for these sickos that by design allows such activity and for their steadfast resistance to making changes that would increase safety.

Damn, I have just had a shocker, and thought of this thread. Someone emailed me a link to my two daughter's accounts. Real eye opener!

Since their mother made it a point years ago to drive a wedge between them and I, it was at least a good thing to see them in their own enviroment now.
