well i just got my car yesterday finally and i found out the motor runs on alcohol and 91 octane (well thats what the kid and his uncle said) is this possible?? they also said his dad was building it for drag racing well i found the rear wheels in a closet looks like he was gonna tube it. can i convert the motor over to pump gas or would it be cheaper to maybe buy a LSX?? as of right now i really dont know what is all on the motor like i said i just got it yesterday. but once i find out ill post it all.

You bought a car without asking about the engine? If the engine wasn't a point of interest for you at the time of purchase can I ask what was?

You can decrease compression four ways: increase the size of the combustion chambers in the heads, change piston profile, (like from a flat top to a dished, or from a domed to a flat top, etc.), run shorter rods so the piston is further down in the bore, or run thicker head gaskets. Which way would be cheaper would depend on what's already been done to the motor. If they got the kind've compression that requires race gas by milling the heads then more than likely you'll have to swap pistons. If they ran domed pistons but left the heads untouched, you MAY be able to get away with having the combustion chambers in the heads worked. Better to know what's in the engine first before we get too carried away though...

the car itself, 1 its a GTO and 2 it sat for 20 yrs coverd up and only has surface rust and i wont need to relpace any panels.

If the car sat for 20 years, more than likely the engine is already trashed. When did they build the engine? What is the engine?
According to the pics, the car does look like its in good shape.

the engine was bought and built right befor he died, so about 3-4 yrs.

Great score! Sell the motor if it's not a Pontiac, and get a 400 or 455 to put back into it! If it is a 400 or 455, rebuild it to make it streetable, sell what you change and get that SWEET goat on the street!

Well what sorts of parts are we talking here?

Butler Performance has awesome parts and are great to deal with, but are more performance geared/priced.

When I rebuilt my 350 the first time, I was buying my parts from Discount Auto Parts, NAPA, PAW, Autozone etc. Just run of the mill stock Pontiac stuff. I didn't know about Jegs and Summit WAAAAY back then(late eighties), but they also carry parts. I've bought cams from Comp Cams and Crane, heads from Edelbrock, etc etc etc.

The block in the hard part to come by, and as long as yours is good I'd try to keep it! Some people say that the 400 is the block of choice, even over the 455. The 455's are just less common, particullary 4 bolt main 455's.

You can buy cranks from Eagle, Scat(a sore subject on the board), etc

Rockers are pretty easy to find in aluminum rollers, and harder in steel rollers. CAT(another vendor of contention here) offers steel roller rockers, which are what I have.

Edelbrock has all your intake, head, and some accessories covered.

March Perfomance, Street & Performance?(The company in Arkansas), and even Billet Specialties, offer dress up pullies and serpentine belt drives for Ponchos!

I just finished up a 1969 GTO Clone for a friend of mine(his name is Matt too) and he chose to use Jim Butler Performance pieces. We purchased the shortblock built by them and have had no problem as of yet. He used the 400 block with the stroke of a 455. I know Kaufmann Racing is another good company to deal with. We also have a good Pontiac guy here in Brooksville Florida that is pretty heavy on the pontiac message boards his website is http://www.pontiacdude.cc/ check him out also. i give up for now i think im going to use the guys that my cuzin is using to build his prostreet 57 chevy, im like lost on all this engine stuff (im only 16 cut me some slack ), ill just give them the motor tell them about it and say i wont something that is streetable. ill just provide the funds.

Make sure you take down as much information/numbers/identifing mark/photos as possible before handing it over. I have had more than one shop try to return the wrong parts to me after a "re-build". TRUST NOONE!
