Boom Tubes

Looking at doing boom tube side exits on my 2006 Mustang GT, the few i’ve found for sale are an arm and a leg so I was going to weld and fabricate my own. I’ve seen lots of different dimensions and kinds, all producing a different sound. Could anyone guide me and give me direction as to what dimensions would give me a deep rumbly muscle car sound? Hope it’s not a dumb question �� but anyone who can point me in the right direction i’d really appreciate!! Aswell as when I make them should I use aluminum or stainless steel or something else ?

If you want a classic muscle car sound, why not use a classic muscle car muffler? These mufflers sound amazing, and are by far my favorite.

Aluminum is not a good choice as its melting point is too close to exhaust temps. I already looked into it. IMO aluminum would only work if the mufflers were behind the axle, to give the exhaust time to cool before reaching them. If you can weld aluminum and stainless, you can also look into making them out of titanium. It'll cost a bit more, but materials and your labor would probably no more than buying a pre-made muffler. You'd get the strength and heat resistance of steel and the weight of aluminum that way. When the time comes for my project's exhaust I plan to take one of my Classic Chamber mufflers to a local shop that does titanium work and have them duplicated as I'm building mine to be as light as possible. Titanium mufflers will be pricy, but will weigh about 35 percent of the weight of stainless mufflers, which will be some pounds. I asked Classic Chamber about making me a set from titanium but they are unable to do so.

I haven’t really thought about that, the old muscle cars i’ve seen didn’t have mufflers on them and to be honest didn’t know there was much of a difference between then and now. Part of the reason for boom tubes is I was going to try to do side exits for the exhaust right in front of the rear tires in that area. I have a 3 inch exhaust which even if I cut away what i can won’t be able to fit due to how low my car is. Boom tubes are flatter and from what i’ve seen they sound pretty good so I measured and saw I could get 1.5-2 inches of clearance, which i think should fit a boom tube but not my 3 inch exhaust.

No worries, I completely understand. Of the materials you posted to make your own, I'd do the stainless. A Mustang is a short car, so side exits would put the mufflers within a few of feet of the headers. Headers on a street car can get as hot as 1100°F to 1800°F, and aluminum will melt at 1200°F. Plus, aluminum does not like repeated heat cycles.

I'd also suggest titanium as an alternative as it's quite a bit lighter, but all else equal will have a sharper, higher pitched sound than stainless. But, it's many pounds lighter vs stainless.

1. Your neighbors probably already hate you with 3" exhaust on a 4.6 that doesn't need it.
2.. They will loathe you with side exhaust
3. Your car is low, any side exit exhaust will most likely drag the ground and look dumb
4. Don't do it
5. Go to Facebook marketplace and search for boom tube. There's NASCAR shops in NC selling them used.
6. Don't do it.
7. Try turn downs after the mufflers instead.
8. Did I mention this is dumb and don't do it?
