      Noisy TKO

The TKO600 in my PT Maverick I recently purchased seems quite noisy. I'm new to the Tremec trans. It's a more constant noise so seems more like an input or output shaft bearing. Not super noticeable until getting higher in speed. Is there a common issue with these? Are they generally noisy?

Bearings in a TKO are pretty stout, input bearing is a tapered bearing. Have you checked/changed the oil? Any silver color to the oil?

All manuals can be noisy, but not overly noisy.

What happens when you push the clutch in? Does the noise continue or stop?

      Does this car have interior?

Sorry. Didn't see your post until now. Thanks for the response.

Fluid was a little low. I topped it off. 1/3 of a quart. The noise continued to get worse. Noise stopped with the clutch in. Decided to pull it out. Apparently had regular motor oil in it. Good amount of silver in the oil. Generally looked terrible like it might have moisture in it as well? I dropped it off at a local shop that works on them. Haven't heard back yet but pretty sure it's got to be the input bearing. No clue if the previous owner checked for concentricity between the crank and the bellhousing but I will be doing that before putting it back in along with changing the pilot bearing just to be safe. It has a McLeod RST dual disc clutch, McLeod SFI flywheel and hydraulic throwout. All that looks fine.

I've seen guys put 90wt or motor oil in manuals or transfer cases that require special fluid or ATF. That's unfortunate.

Something is definitely not happy inside that box.

Good idea on the pilot bearing, might as well change it if you're in there.

Let us know what the shop finds.

Pretty sure this was 10-40 or something similar. I have the Monolec Syn from Lubrication Engineers to go back in it. I setup and measured concentricity today. Kind of a pain by myself but using my phone on a little tripod for some video and more than a few trips under the car I got it done. All good with .0025 runout. Lots of weirdness from the previous owner changing motors on his own. We chased a lot of loose bolts including some in the bellhousing. There was even a zip tie trapped between the block spacer plate and the bellhousing. I'm guessing somewhere in all of that was misalignment that caused the input bearing issue. Leak at the rear of the trans turned out to be a missing O ring on the speedo housing. I'm taking no chances after seeing all of that so changing the pilot bearing was a must. Got the old one out. Delivery from Summit today was a bronze bushing in a McLeod 8606 pilot bearing package. Sheesh. As usual Summit was super helpful getting the right thing on the way...I hope.
