      Clear Vinyl Wrap

Looking for some input on Clear Vinyl Wrap over custom paint job on 69 Firebird. Any reviews on this vinyl wrap and experience with it would be appreciated. Thanks. Jerry

PPF (Paint Protection Film) is what's typically used in that application. It's thicker than standard vinyl wrap and crystal clear. I've never installed it myself, but I think it's more difficult to work with than vinyl.

Thanks for reply. Anybody out here ever had it done on their car. Or even ceramic coatings?

I had it done to my car black 69 camaro well worth it if its done right !it was xpel ppf makes cleaning so easy !that being said I built the whole car including paint and thats one thing i didnt do materials expensive and if not done right would make the car look worse.you could only do some peices like header panel, lower valance, and bottom of quarters and fenders to save some money

The only problem is even with the best PPF or vinyl it will eventually discolor. 5-10-20 years but will happen. Most top end warranty covers 10 years.

Problem with removing is it can in some instances (rare) take paint of with it when removed.

Ceramic coatings are nice but they don’t protect like PPF the stuff is micron levels thick so won’t help with scratching..

I’m really undecided about PPF, my car hopefully is coming out of paint soon and I’d like to protect it from scratches and chips but the cost to ppf a whole car is around 5-7k for a 69 Camaro. If it was $1-2k it would be a no brainer but I’m thinking if I do get a couple chips or scratches wouldn’t it cost the same or even cheaper to repaint a fender or quarter or hood at $5-7k price point? Also the PPF only lasts 5 years or so before it starts to deteriorate as far as I heard.

I've seen the clear protective wrap pull the clear and paint off a newly painted car when removed. Was told the clear and paint had not cured enough before it was applied.

I called the top ceramic coater around here and was told the clear film would not stick over ceramic coating.

Not sure the product they used, but I have a 2006 Lotus that has had ‘Star shield’ from new. It’s on the front end, rockers and behind the rear tires. It’s only slightly yellowed at this point and no where near bothering me enough to do something about it.

The longer the adhesive sits the harder it is to remove. Also the PPF get brittle and what may cost you hundreds to remove may be thousands as it will break if in hundreds of little pieces instead of one big one.

Fresh paint needs to breathe. I would not apply any film for at least six months to a year. You risk trapping solvents otherwise.

      PPF/Ceramic Coat

We bought a 21 Corvette and had Xpell wrap the front half of the car bottom 1/4 and the top and had it ceramic coat the whole car to includ ethe outside of the rims and inside has been 2 years now and couldnt be happer especially with coating the rims they never have breakdust and is super easy to clean a little expensive for it but well worth it. As for the look unless you no where to look you can't tell it.
