      Push to start button?

Id like to find some way to not have my keys wagging back and forth across my dash ('68 Camaro). I dig the idea of an ignition switch in a cubby in the console and a push to start button (ala Honda S2000 or Lexus) in place of the ignition switch on the dash.

      Anyone done anything like this?
      Have suggestions?
      Have a schematic?

      Muchos Mahalos!

I have a bad experiance for ya. We decided to hide the key in Prodigy and use a push button, long story short while tuning the engine started to race a bit, try finding that freakin key when you are freaking out! We did no damage, except to our own hearts! But needless to say, we have the key where it should be!

if you have to use a push button, a company called Ignited makes a nice lighted one. Look them up on google.

I did it, the button is sold by factory five racing. I also put an engine kill switch within reach.

Sweet. I was thinking of using the current ignition location for the button, and the cig lighter for the fire T-handle.

when i got my car, the guy that owned it before me (not an intelligent person) drilled a hole just under the ignition for a push button start.
I've gotten rid of it since. i like the idea just not below the ignition.

some of the newer cars have the keys in the middle, vertically in the center console. it might be cool if you have a custom center console. its simple to do as well, just moving a couple wires to the new switch.

Here is a link that I found a while back when I was installing a push button start in my 4th gen console; in my 68 Camaro. It's for a newer Camaro, but just follow the wiring diagram for your 68.

What about using the stock key and cylinder for the power and then a seperate switch for the ignition?

That is exactly what I am doing (using the 68 cylinder, and key). I am currently looking for a better looking ignition cylinder before I permanently install the cylinder in my 02 dash. All I keep finding are cheap looking after market units, with small keys.

is the diagram from ls1 tech still using the key to run power to the relay? I have the button installed in my chevelle, but haven't been able to get the wiring right. I would like to be able to retain the security of a key, and use the button for the iginition. Is that what that link shows? Forgive me for being electricly challenged!

Yeah, you still use the key in the run position to power the car, but you press the button to start the car. To turn the car off, you need to turn the key off like a stock ignition. Hope that helps.

If you wire a push start button using a latching relay you can actually turn the vehicle on and off with the same button. You simply use the latching relay to trigger the starter relay and use the other side of the latching relay to shut the car off.

That is exactly what I am looking to achieve.

Can anyone scribble a quick and dirty schematic of that?

I will draw up the diagram this week for it, it's rather simple, just a few relays

I'd like to see that setup diagram also. Sounds like a really sweet way to change/update the interior "look" of older cars. But what do you use for security, a hidden ignition cut-out or battery disconnect?

I would like to see that too. I am thinking of running the key cylinder in the center console I am using for security purposes - the key must be in the on position for the button to work - if that possible and still have the buttom for start and stop....... Still in fitment of the console, so this is the perfect time to incorporate something like this....

That is a really good idea.
Where can you get a latching relay? is it the same as a 'regular' relay?
