      Question for all.

      I need some help
I recently took my car back to the painter to get some misc runs and some assembly nics corrected. They ended up re-clearing the whole car and they said they wet sanded. I went to see the progress and now the car has all of these microfine scratches on it.
      1) Did he wet sand to deep?
      2) Will I be able to get these scratches out?
      3) Should I shoot him for having to take it back in the first place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks

are the sand scratches in the clear? or in the color coat under it?

can you feel them? If you can feel them, they will come out.

They were so fine and I was so ticked that I do not remember if I felt them or not. The only time you saw them is when the light was hitting it directly.

I took some hand glaze that he had there and tested a spot. I saw a little difference but the scratches were there. God I hope it is not in the base. This has been a nightmere....

well since you've seen a difference then I'd have to say that most likely its in the clear, and could be buffed out. just be careful. You could burn right through, chasing scratches in the base. Something that happens all the time. what color are we dealing with? deep red or something? Is there a black additive in the base?

I'm with Tony....I say it's in the clear just needs a little more buffing.

I was not aware that you could re-clear a car after it has cured. Is there a time frame that you have to get it done by?

the red nomad we did this year was sprayed...pulled out waited 24hrs wet sanded with 600.....pushed back in and recleared.....just recently we wet sanded the roof once again with 800 and fixed two spots and recleared it again

as long as the surface is scuffed of sanded, clear away.....

Well cool. I thought you had to cut the clear and reblend it in with what you dont cut, building it backup up. I am not a painter (as you can tell), but I like learning how it is done.

you can burn clear in (fresh clear into unsanded clear) also but that is a whole other deal....they sure turn out nice when they have been cleared, cut, and recleared.....

How much to you cut before reclearing? just before you hit color or just enough to remove any imperfections.

      My car

They actually took off the original clear. The last time I was in it was a really dull red. They did not go directly over the top of the original clear.

when you sand clear it turns dull , then you buff back the shine . color is applied just to give it color ,you dont use color to hide or build up .

Thanks for all of the help

You have eased my mind a little bit. It just sucks that I took it in and it was a little fisheyed and had some runs and now the fisheye is gone but the scratches are there. Wish me luck. He is not going to get a dime until it is right. So I am thinking 2008, I will have it back!!

you say you went to see the "progress made" if he didnt present it as a finished product then have some patience and wait till he says its "done" its perfectly normal to see fine scratches in a car that hasnt been completley buffed out yet and if he hasnt gotten to that step yet then chill out have a beer and smile man. if it shows up with scratches after he says its finished then absolutley shoot him. j/k

You could always take pics. When I used to take cars to those places, I would show up with a camera throughout the job, wanting pics of the project in process. That way you could post them here.

I showed up today and he felt that it was done and that he could put on the hauler and shipped to my house tommorrow, that is when I pointed out all of the scratches and he mentioned that they will do another glaze. You have to understand that the car was there the first time for about 6 months (He said 1 month)and now it has been there another 3 months(Said 2 weeks). Honestly I am not a perfectionist, I just want it to look decent.

      I do need a beer.
