      GM tilt/telescope steering columns

I know little about steering columns but I'd like to install a manual tilt/telescope column like those on the manual trans C3 Vettes into my '76 Nova. I know this is a retrofit so some fab work will be needed. I understand that column length is a consideration. Anything else I need to be aware of?

Anyone know if these are collapsible?

Any other ideas/model cars to look for?

How about a source for reconditioned ones?

      Thanks,

Wasn't "collapsible" a requirement from like 68 on?

From looking at http://www.corvettefaq.com/listing.asp?group=7 it looks like Tilt and Telescope was an option from 67-82 (or at least those are all the years that documentation are available on that site for) - and if nothing else, at least that site has the repair manual pages for those columns.

http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/Telesc...67-68Scan2.doc *looks like* the shaft is collapsible on the 67/68s and http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/T&TColumnD&R121AU05.doc says
The one type that is not addressed in this paper is the telescoping only 1968 model. It was a carry-over, energy absorbing column from 1967
so I'm pretty sure they are.

This is also useful from that same doc:
1969 through 1976 - T&T Corvette Energy Absorbing (EA), Function Locking (FL) Steering Column
1977 - T&T Corvette EA, FL Steering Column with wash/wipe switch and headlamp dimmer, ignition key release lever, & optional cruise control in the tilt lever.
1978 through 1982 - Corvette EA, FL Steering Column with headlamp dimmer, ignition key release lever, & optional cruise control in the turn signal lever.

      Very Kool...

Derek, Thanks for the links, I really like the idea of a wiki for car stuff. I guess that's what we try to do indirectly here. There's a contact in the docs and I'll see if he has any leads.

I guess the steering column didn't change much from 68-82. Crazy huh?

Tough guys may wear pink, but Bad Asses still wear black.

dgumoe -- I'll give them a call I didn't see anything online from them.

I've found some other resources that I havn't had time to call yet. It seems that Cads has these as well.

      Here's one link I found:

Yes! I had a '78 Coupe DeVille and it had tilt/ telescopic column on it. Only downside, column shift, if that makes a difference to you.

Not trying to hijack your thread but I have been wondering about a tilt column for my 67 camaro. Are there any factory columns that will bolt in without modification?
