      Footwell platform

In peeking into a bunch of different cars (CMC, GT, vintage, Spec Miata etc) I have noticed many, but not all cars have a platform built into the footwell. Essentially what it does is elevate the floor beneath the pedals.

What is the purpose of this?

Since I don't see it on all cars I'm wondering if it is a fit issue, or is it specific to a certain driving technique.

      Thanks...

Are you referring to a "dead" pedal? Some cars have a raised section on the left side of the footwell to provide a resting spot for your left foot. It allows you to brace yourself when cornering hard. Obviously it is found more often in automatic cars. Anyway, this is called a dead pedal.

      For hanging pedals?

I wonder if the raised footwell is something used to correct poor pedal setups, like many hanging pedal designs? I believe floor-mounted pedals will correct most if not all of the reasons for raised footwells. Of course this is just a guess, so educate me!

almost all professionally built rally cars have them, it makes it easier to operate the petals in driving shoes.

I woud guess that wearing racing shoes witch have little to no heel, lowers your feet on the pedals and you might want to raise them back up with a spacer. The lack of floor padding or carpets also lowers your feet a little. Ideally, you shouldn't have to raise your heels off the floor to operate the pedals but the geometry of hanging pedals may require some extra heel to floor clearance over floor mounted pedals.
