T56 Magnum - American Powertrain Reverse Lockout Module

I'm in the process of buttoning up a T56 Magnum install in my El Camino. I saw an article about the American Powertrain Reverse Lockout Module and I was wondering if it's a must have or will tapping into the brake light wire work just as well?

Has anyone used this lockout module and is it worth $124?

      Thanks.

I don't use one but here is a little cheaper option I was looking at when I installed my t56.

I'm sure people will say this is bad advice but I just overpower the solenoid to put it in reverse. Been working fine for 2 years now.

I have this as well as 3 other cars in the shop. Works like a charm. Ground it first, run two wires to the reverse lockout, and in my case 1 wire to the speed signal, then power. Simple as that. Feels factory

Utilizing the lock out module is the best way to do it. We also sell the one that Wire Barn makes and it works great. I know most guys typically will just hook it into the brake light switch or overpower it manually. I haven't run into anyone who has ruined the lock out solenoid by hooking it to the brake light switch, but that would be the only downside is that it pops it each time the brakes are used.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to hook it up to the brake light switch for now so I can get some test drives in.

I wired mine up to the brake lights as well. I haven't had a problem yet either. Been almost a year so far.

I used the Wire Barn setup on a customer's car. Recommended: it does work nicely.

There is no reason to spend a $100 or more for a reverse lock out relay. A lot of people wire the lock out to the brakes but the one thing that I do not like about that approach is that the solenoid is activated every single time you press the brake pedal regardless of whether or not you are actually shifting to reverse. I took a different approach, I used a shift knob equipped with a line lock button and wired that to the reverse lock out solenoid. This shift knob button works exceptionally well since your hand is already on the knob when shifting so it is a natural movement to press and hold the button with your thumb when shifting to reverse. Of course this approach assumes you are not already using such a knob for a line lock or nitrous system.

I'm using this Speeddawg knob but you can buy line lock knobs anywhere.

That's also a good option, thanks for the input!

I am running a T56 in my 72 ElCamino and have not wired the lockout, a firm push overrides the lockout easily.

For those that as re pushing buttons, flipping switches etc why? I want my cAR to function just like a factory car would. The wire barn module is simple and acts like the factory. Then again I'm the same guy that n installed a neutral safety switch on a cAR that didn't come with it. Why bc a new factory car would
