      Rag Joint/Rag Joint Eliminator

I'm doing a I-Roc steering box swap in my 78 firebird. I ordered a Lars 205 Rag joint to replace my old one. The rag joint splined coupler fits great but the mounting holes of the steering shaft and the joint are a little off. Roughly 1/4". I was considering elongating the mounting holes but was unsure if I would be able to get the bolts in after the fact without massaging them. I was asking about this on a Facebook group and someone mentioned that I should have got a rag joint eliminator instead.

I did a little homework but was unable to find any solid info on this for my car. I read about binding and clunking issues on some cars. Just curious what you guys have done.

Check Borgenson for an eliminator. Why not use a 1980 Firebird coupler instead. That is what the Pontiac forum at forum.maxperformance.com/forum. I did a jeep steering box adapter on a 66 Lemans conv and that is what they say to use. Some says to use the chev truck coupler but the Firebird coupler is a lot less. Sounds to me like you are using the coupler for the Monte which might be metric.

on my 1987 monte carlo i used a jeep cherokee (not grand cherokee) intermediate shaft to eliminate rag joint, has two ujoints, and works great. $50.00 on ebay... i had a problem with the rubber where the shaft connects to the steering wheel shaft, my headers were really close and the heat loosened up the rubber, so i drilled a 5/16" hole all the way thru and bolted it together, solid now.
