Rosette rivets VIN rivet need dimensions

I had to remove my VIN tag when welding in a new dash. If anyone has an unused GM rosette rivet can you please provide dimensions. Overall length, head diameter and number of flutes, shank diameter, shank length. I appreciate any assistance. IM is welcome if you prefer to stay anonymous.

Ebay has multiple listings for vin tag rivets.

Yeah seen those, I can buy these for significantly less than $20per rivet, looking for dimensions to ensure I buy the correct rivets.

With the internet the ability for any vendor to regularly "gouge" a consumer is nearly eliminated. IF after a search you cannot find several of the same product at a lower price--you have just established it's value. IF you find a product at a lower price your result can ONLY be a different or inferior product.

It is always worth what it is.

I sold cars both new and used ....maybe I'm lost but, why doesn't this matter so much . I've never seen a insurance company or equivalent investigate the Vin tag or the Size/type of rivets

If anything VIN-wise doesn't look like the factory did it, everyone will rightfully be suspicious. The largest reason to mess with VINs is car theft. There are laws about what you can/can't do with the main VIN locations on vehicles. Messing with VINs is akin to messing with odometers for example.

To obtain a title in North Carolina any 35 years old car or older brought into the state from another state/country has to have a visual vin tag inspection done by the License and Theft Bureau. If they see anything out of sorts they can go farther including disassembling the car to verify the hidden vin matches the title/vin tag.

Exactly why a car with a tainted vin tag or title history is virtually worthless to me, it's not worth the headache.

I am in North Carolina and just cut the top off of my dash to weld in a patch panel and left the VIN tag intact in the piece I cut off. Any advise on how I get the VIN back onto the patch panel ? Don't want to do anything stupid . I have a clean title and the car was registered the first year I had it but its been off the road for a while and is not currently registered.

I would section in a good sized piece of the original dash piece with the riveted tag. Metal finish both sides to perfection.

If you already have a NC title you're good to go, they only do this inspection when you apply for a title for a car that's come in from out of state. I would however do what Don suggested or find the correct rivets to reinstall the tag. I wish these states would come up with a proper method to remove and reinstall the vin tag for restoration purposes that is actually legal.

Thanks for the advise and I agree that the states should establish a better method. My 69 is a basic original 6cyl car and its not like I am trying to pass it off as anything special like a Z/28

The issue is theft, not trying to pass it off as a better model. Tampered VIN tags are a flag for potential theft.

You can google stolen Camaro and read a few stories. There was one where the original owner got his car back after 30 years. Somebody stole it and probably changed the vin tag. The car probably got sold a couple times but somebody finally figured out that the vin tag didn't match anything on the car. In cases like this, the DMV recovers the car and the recent owner loses the car and his money. The thief is probably long gone, hard to find after 30 years. I think they did a spot on 60 minutes a couple years ago, but I could be wrong. I talked to one guy at a cruise night and he said there are people around who can recreate VIN tags and also do any hidden stamped codes.

The moral of that story is never mess with VIN zags LOL.

Appreciate the feedback guys. I had to replace my dash and I just want the car to look right and not get any questions. I owned the car for 26 years, didn't think sourcing these would be a big deal, oops.

The ebay rivets seem to run about $20 each. I can get 100 for much less than 2 of the eBay rivets. just need dimensions so I get the right ones.

Yes the Internet is amazing, these rivets are made in other countries and to them it's just a rivet.
