Project "Substitute"

After watching all these threads about builds I thought I would give everyone some more material to look at. The build is a 68 Camaro. Its badged as an SS but Im not sure if it really is. Ive done some research and it has all the makings of a small block/ 4 speed SS car. Now it is a BB402/ M21/12 Bolt 3.42.



I bought the car Sept 14'. I'm calling it "Substitute" because I originally wanted a Nova. After a while looking, a guy at work mentioned his son had a 68 Camaro that he may be interested in selling. After looking at the car 5-6 times and dickering with him, we settled on $6500. Its was an ex-drag car but wasn't cutup. The car has a very healthy 402 and the 4 speed had been swapped for a TH350. Nothing n the way of lights worked. The wiring was in shambles. Interior was bad except for the seats, they were in decent condition.

Last year I replaced all the wiring with AAW kit. All new interior except for seats. Replaced the cam in the 402 for a less aggressive grind. New Edelbrock 750. New brake booster. Swapped the 4:10 spool for the 3:42 posi. The axles were 33 spline strange. Those were kept when the 3:42's were installed.Basically got the car back to road worthy and drove it all year.

The car drove decent and ran great. After driving it all yr i realized I want to swap in some modern amenities in the chassis and interior, as well as paint.

Thanks. Im not a fan of the green. Im going with something different but cant make a decision yet.

I will be doing all the work myself.

Starting the tear down.


Frame out and being blasted. I started trying to blast the frame myself using the HF Red pressure Tank. It was taking forever with all the rust on it. Decided to take it to a guy that charged me $50 and had it done in about 25 min. (while I waited)


Some hidden treasures and my (mediocre blasting job). All of the frame mounts were rusted out like this.



After the good blast job and some repair work:


The frame was bent like crazy from jacking over the years so I decided to fix it like some others Ive seen on the board.
