      Holley efi tuner

Anybody know of a tuner in northern Nj well versed in Holley HP EFI. OR someone who
      can do remote tuning?

I didn't think the Holley couldn't be tuned easy enough by anyone? Call the tech line, I believe they can provide all the help you would ever need.

      Holley efi tuner

Virtually anyone who is well versed in EFI tuning can tune the Holley EFI, it's very user friendly. I used a shop that had never tuned a Holley EFI before and it turned out great. The Tuner even commented how good he thought the system was compared to other stand alone EFI systems on the market.

Making some progress, it can get aggravating. So much to worry about on a complete build.

Post up whatever issues you are having. I just installed a Dominator system on my Cougar and after a short learning curve, it's pretty damn intuitive. The software is great and if you have a question on any parameter, you can click the Help? button, then click any parameter, and it will bring up a descriptive window as to what that parameter does. As for the base fuel map, there is the auto tune feature that works amazingly well.

Trying to tune 548 ci. BBC with edelbrock proflo XT intake. Was dynoed with 850 Holley and Victor Jr. Intake. Made 690 hp and 750 ft. lbs. According to Holley I have to run open loop at idle because of the cam. I did that and changed the tune and at least it idled now. I did not drive it yet because I still need to shake out some gremlins on the whole car. I was told I have to tune idle fuel map myself because I had to limit self learn to 1500 rpm and above. Still trying to figure out how to do that.

      Thanks for the help.

      Tom,

When the engine is idling, what kPa value are you seeing? How big is the cam?

      duration at .050 242 254 lift .650 .620 lobe separation 108 hydraulic roller.

I think I had 60-70 kpa. It was the first time I could get it to idle so I was more interested in the idle and temps/ oil pressure.

That's a pretty rowdy cam. You loose a lot of resolution in your base fuel and spark tables. Personally, I would gladly give up 40-50 HP for a cam that was milder and more street friendly.

To enable closed loop only above 1500 rpm, go to the system ICF (icon looks like the HP ECU), go to "Closed Loop/Learn" check off "Enable closed loop" check off "Enter RPM to enter closed loop" then input the desired RPM in the box. Synch with ECU (arrows going in a circle button), then turn ignition off for 5 seconds, then on again.

I found with mine it helps to advance the timing a couple degrees for the rpm right under your target idle. So say you want it to idle at 900rpm, have the timing at say 16* at 800 and lower, and your idle timing 14 at 900. Also make sure your IAC is seated and closed when its warm if your using one.

The HP has idle spark control that is used to smooth out the idle. This doesn't have to be used, but it's recommended. The IAC should be at about 2% when the engine is hot. So adjust the throttle blade to achieve this value. Remember to do a TPS AutoSet after making any throttle blade adjustments.

I have it set for learn and closed loop at 1500. I have tried to get iac to sit a 2% it won't. I did not enable idle spark yet. Not sure what to put the numbers at. Still have to figure out timing table. My first stab at the tune I kept transferring learn to base, that was wrong. Started over and finally got it to idle, still won't fast idle right away. The cam was picked by me, engine builder and Straub Tech. I was asking for it to be a little soft on the bottom, wasn't looking for all out horsepower up top, more mid range. Should have done more research and asked more questions about what would be sacrificed for that cam. I would have gone wider on the separation and added a touch more duration. I will try and run the car this weekend. I want to data log it. I am going to run through base timing and re-read about idle spark. Still trying to figure out the inductive delay. Also injector end angle. If you could clarify how to choose fuel map settings for idle I would appreciate it. I have been on the Holley EFI forums a lot, they help many people. Some guys are as confused as me, that is why I posted here, another view always helps, some one might have the same issues as me and not be on that board. I was confused about base timing with timing light, I set it at 10*, no where did it say what number to use. Some people had the same question and could not get a number pinned down. Everybody has a different combo so it will differ.
      Thanks for any suggestions.

I can't help with the base timing, I run a LS engine, so it is plug and play with the coil on plug.

For idle tuning the wideband may not be very precise, but it should be a relatively good guide. With all the overlap in that cam, you might be getting false lean readings. If it was me, I would use old school tricks, like smoke from the pipes, smell, and reading plugs.

With that cam, you are going to be fighting this thing all the way. Mine idles at about 50 kPa and I consider that marginal. There is a lot of good info here for idle tuning:

      A few things I've learned...

I run more timing advance at idle than I expected... 23-25* typically on my LS. Don't know if that will translate.

I could never get mine to sit consistently at IAC of 2%. It varies all over the place as the temperature changes. I try to shoot for 5 - 8%, and I'm lucky to keep it in that range.

Heed the words Andrew said if you don't already know: make sure you re-do the TPS Autoset if you touch the throttle body. I've forgotten that one a couple of times.

One thing I read that helped me set the idle is to set the Fuel Table entries around your idle speed to fixed values that are all very close. This keeps a consistent amount of fuel even if the vacuum or RPM are jumping around. So determine where your idle is going to be after getting the throttle blades and IAC set, then adjust the entries in the fuel table around that point to be all the same value.

Read this thread. I found it very helpful when I was working out my idle, specifically related to setting the fuel table entries above.

      http://forums.holley.com/showthread....e-Tuning-Notes

Good luck! I really like my Holley. I found it pretty easy to get up and going with, and there are more tweaking features for me to continue to learn. I'm trying to better under the optimal end of injector timing right now. My car is down, but I plan to experiment with that soon once she's running again...

started from scratch on the base timing, it was off. Got that good and enabled idle spark. Still cannot get iac to cooperate, it won't move off of 0% no matter how much I adjust throttle srew. It did idle better and sound better. It idles a little high and won't come down. I did drive it down the drive way and turned it around, spun the tires and didn't know it.

Still trying to figure out what to put the numbers at in the table. I don't want to change anything before I understand it.

Any chance you have a vacuum leak? If you unscrew the TB screw, at some point the IAC should take over regulating the idle speed. What speed is the engine idling at? What are you requesting in the Idle Speed graph?

Regarding the Fuel Table settings, I used my AFR to determine the approximate value that the engine wanted to get the AFR I wanted. I think the link I had above shows the 'pattern' which they suggest entering in the table around idle. As long as you start close to where you are now, you can create that same kind of pattern around the entries that the ECU uses during idle. It will jump around some, depending on the cam. I don't have access to mine at the moment, but I think my values were in the 6.5 to 7.0 range, in a pattern like that showed, to maintain an idle around 13.5 or so.

I have my idle timing set to around 22*, but have run it at 25* which helped smooth it out some too.

No vacuum leak. Idle is at 1100 requsting 950. I won't be running the car for a while I have to change out my fan controller because it keeps popping the breakers. I am going with a pwm set up. I also had to finish my pcv system and I will have to move my fuel lines, they are getting too hot. I need to work out some gremlins before I fire it up again. I want to get it to go down the road soon. I will post back up when I fire it again. if you think of anything else I would appreciate it. I am going to read up more on the help section and on Holley forums. Thanks
