How much primer?

How many gallons of primer should be sprayed on to perform a proper block sanding session? My painter needs 1 more quart because they used 2 quarts for the first block sanding session. Does that seem right?
Using DuPont primer

That's a lot......The body needs to be straighter before they are blocking. If they used 2 gallons and are still hitting high spots the panel was not flat in the first place.

For a very thick prime they should have used 2 gal with plenty left over. And that would be with like 8 coates.

It is a polyester primer so it goes on quite thick. lt depends on how much ends up on the floor too.

I thought it was a lot too considering its near 400.00 a gallon. The body shop owner said that the more they spray on the better the blocking would work. There were a few low spots that ended up with filler/spot putty. I saw it in person before the second priming and it looked pretty straight. It got primed again today and is going through one more block sanding before sealing and bc/cc. I'm no body guy so I just assume he's right. It's also quite a big car.

My son is painting a 70 Chevelle for me, he is saying that we will need 2 gal. for primer, for most things he has under estimated the amount of supplies needed.
but with that I must also tell you that he is a student at Milfords Auto body course in/near Lincoln Nebraska.

So I would say that they are putting to much on the floor.

$400/gal is very high for polyester primer, what brand is he using? I use Evercoat Super Build which is a great primer and a very good brand and it sells for $150/gal.

It honestly sounds like they are using Primer to be the "Filler" in the body. Yes, it is a large car, but a good body man will have that car flat, before he primes. Then sprays, blocks, find the very very minimal areas that were missed, or not noticeable until primer and spray one last time before blocking.

3 gallons of primer is a lot no matter the car.

hell I have used this primer on many cars and it works great. Even at $45 a gallon id be pissed if I had to buy a 3rd

Knowing my luck it's going on someone else's car. It's. Ppg ncp280. Really expensive in California. We also have super strict Voc laws. Its also is being blocked twice if that matters. Body worked looked good from what I saw. They supposedly spray a little under 2 gallons per priming. After this next blocking it will be sealed then bc/cc
