      Alternator Question

Is an internally regulated alternator also a 1 wire alternator?

I want an internally regulated alternator but it HAS to be a 3 wire. I've read the sticky and the Mad Electric website. Either I'm missing it or not getting it.

      Thanks

To answer yuor question... No. An internally regulated alternator does not mean it is a 1 wire.
Most every manufacturer uses the 3 wire system when wiring their alternators. Using the sense wire to recognize system voltage requirements allows the regulator to do it's job. It will regulate output as system demands require.
The only place a 1 wire alternator is effective is on tractors and utility vehicles that have no other system draw then charging a battery.

An internally regulated alternator can be either 1 wire or 3 wire. That said, a typical 10SI or 12SI 1 wire alternator can be inexpensively modified to a 3 wire by simply changing the regulator.
