      Hub Center Bore Dia - New Rims on Old Hubs

      I have a set of 2011 Camaro SS Rims I want to put on the front of a 50's Panel. Rears won't be a problem with a spacer/adapter. The fronts are another story. The hub center bore on the SS rims are ~67 mm. The hubs on the Heidts MII front clip, running I believe GM intermediate disc brakes from the late 60's, are ~78 mm. I don't know if opening up the SS rims is an option but I would rather replace the existing hubs. Trying to mount the SS rims leaves me about 2" from being seated - and it appears they would fit pretty well in that position. Another issue may be the spindle shaft length - distance from the rim mating surface to the center cap is only ~1", very short, and if I could seat on the existing hub the spindle would stick out beyond the center cap ~2" or so. An adapter/spacer to push the rims out far enough to seat would also see them hit the fender lip.
      So, bottom line - need help trying to determine what spindle/hub combination I can use to accommodate the SS rims. This would also allow me to run larger disc brakes. Appreciate any help. -Bob

      After having done some research since my post I think one possible solution is to use late model Camaro (maybe Vette?) spindle/hubs. Trying to find a way to mate them up to my MII a-arms. Not sure what the impact would be to my existing rack steering arm location but that's another issue to tackle after solving the hub issue. Would appreciate any info on this retrofit. Also wondering if this is more of a suspension question than a wheels & tires question and if I should re-post it? -Bob

      Personally I don't think you can run a Vette style spindle on a MII suspension. We have used some wheels on a Wilwood front hub that requires deleting the center cap, and machining out the center a bit for the wheel hub/snout diameter. However, the Wilwood hub is tapered so usually there's not much modification required. Just a thought!

      Bob, if the primary goal is to run the 2010 Camaro SS wheels, then there may be simpler ways to do that without reinventing the wheel...pun intended. I've emailed you a layout drawing of the KORE3 MII billet hub for your reference. I have to think that with the thickness of wheel adapter you're going to need to put the backspacing where you need it, that it may be an option for you. A 2" wheel adapter will eliminate the hub engagement with the wheel, so your concerns regarding fitment there are unnecessary. Additionally, the wheel adapter will allow you to convert from what I presume is a 5x4.75 application to the 5x120 pattern of the Camaro wheel. With the adapters, I don't think it would be necessary, however even if the wheel or hub needs some minor modifications, I still think you'll be time and money ahead of a spindle swap without any good direction with respect to steering and such.

      Certainly not having to deal with spindles and machining rim hub centers would simplify things. Tobin, thanks for the drawing - I will do some calcs and see what I think my options are. -Bob
