5L40E Swap?

Hey everyone,

It is about time for me to start shopping for a transmission for my '69 Camaro. I want an overdrive transmission, so I started looking at TH700s. I then decided on a 4L60E because it seems that transmission builders can build them to withstand horsepower cheaper than the TH700s (Correct me if I am wrong). I'm looking to put about 550RWHP on the car, so it needs to be strong.



I heard the hype about the new 6 speed, but who knows when that will be out. But what about the Caddy 5L40E? Could that be a possibility?

6 gears > 5 gears > 4 gears.

If someone could enlighten me about this transmission, swap capibility, etc. I would appreciate it.

At that power level, a competently built 4L60E will be fine. However, I'd say the 4L60E is going to run a bit more than a 700, but it'll be worth it.

I agree. Both 700R4 and 4L60E can be built up. but precise computer control gives the '60E an advantage with respect to BOTH performance and reliability. SO many 700's fail because of improper calibration. The ability to easily tune the 4L60E by computer does offer enhanced reliability.

The 5L40E is/was used on Caddy Catera/CTS and low HP Beemers such as the 328/330 and 528/530 cars. The 540 used a different trans. So reliability in a hot rod application is something of an unknown. Plus, you're on your own with respect to bellhousing, mount and driveshaft adaptation. Plus plus: Much like the 6L80E,s the 5 speeds use sophisticated computer logic.

It would take some work, but a Northstar/5L40E would make for a unique hot rod. If you are serious about the 5 speed, contact Powertrain Control Solutions. Maybe they can get you over the computer hurdle.
