      C4 Corvette VSS issues

So I swapped my 96 vette from an auto to the ZF6 6-speed tranny, everything went well mechanically. Im having issues with the speedometer not working, it will only read 1 or 2 mph depending on how fast I am going. The car will also die when sitting idle at a stop sign some times. I have been told this is due to the VSS not being plugged in or tuned now that nothing is hooked up. Any one have any ideas or a place to point me in the correct direction? I have been digging in alot of corvette forums with out much luck for the last 2 months.

What year model did the ZF tranny come out of and is your VSS hooked up? If your VSS is hooked up did you use the original VSS that was in the ZF tranny or the one from your original tranny?

The ZF came out of a 96 also so its the blue tag version. Since I cant find good consistent info in one spot I assume the VSS is the sensor in the back of the tranny where the speedo normally hooks up. I kept the one that came with the ZF and I just plugged in the wire harness to it. I read somewhere that they should both be 4000 pulses per mile so it should of worked. I gave the old tranny to a buddy that lives 2 hours away so getting the old might be kinda tricky.

I am thinking about buying a Electronic Ratio Adaptor (ERA) and plug that in, but thats a last resort if I cant figure out a simple solution. Here is the box Im talking about. Its a little less then half way down on the page.

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sensor for the auto tranny is different than the ZF tranny. I don't know if the difference is by design or electronic/sensing difference. You might want to call Howell Electronics and ask them if the ECM might be a source of a problem since the ECM was programmed for an auto tranny and now you are using a ZF tranny. They may also give you some advice on the VSS problem. Howell is very knowledgeable on the GM ECMs
