I was pretty sure I brought tech - yes, it was a dumbed down version of the DOT document, but it was definitive and cited the source document where the DOT discussion board looked to be a bit less definitive (yeah, I found it with a google search as well) - I would have cited that as a source if "Kirk" or "Ken" had DOT email addys, but they didn't specify so I didn't think they were all that authoritative.

However, please keep in mind that we're not CC and in some cases, that's not a bad thing. There is no requirement that folks "bring the tech", especially in the General forums (although I'm not sure why folks kept guessing after a definitive answer was given).

Cody: This post makes me think you're starting to trend back towards the "old Yody". You might want to count to ten before posting or something.

Everyone else: Brian has a point - a google search can answer some questions definitively and quite a bit quicker than asking here. If you suck at searching or don't really trust what you find via a search, by all means don't let me dissuade you from posting - but if you're in a hurry and it can be found via google then you'll get your answer a lot quicker.

:icon996: If we were sitting around the camp fire having a few do you think anyone would care about Google or DOT? The nice thing about this sort of question is that it requires some thought, reasoning, and discussion to come up with a reasonably valid answer. It may not be 100% technically correct, but it gets the job done.
Thinking, reasoning, and social interaction all at the same time. WOW, what a concept! :icon996:

Well I broke my promise this one time and came back. I believe it will be the last time, so all of you that don't like me now can relax.

First off, those who are focusing on the lane width issue are missing my larger point. When I first came on this forum there was a much smaller group and the discussions were more tightly focused. Over the years (BTW, I have been here much longer than my account shows-used to be protour2001) Pro-touring has become more popular and we have gained a lot of members. There is still a lot of technical information here that can't be found anywhere else, and that's why I keep coming back.

However, there is also a lot of "noise" now. Some of it is confined to the Outhouse, however there is a fair amount in all forums. Now we get a lot of the "me too :icon_razz " posts, post whoring, and my pet peeve, the guessers. This is where the lane width thing comes in. Yes, it was a minor issue, but when posts are made with guesses and faulty information, it can be misleading and hard to sift through to find accurate information.

And yes, if we were having a conversation a lot of this stuff is said. That's what chat rooms are like-but like it or not this is a technical forum, and people come here for answers(again, larger picture here, not just lane widths).

Answer this question-when you look at these forums, aren't there certain people whose posts carry a little more weight, a little more authority? I know for me there are, that's why I'm here-to learn from those people. Unfortunately, I have noticed some of them posting less and less or confining themselves to limited areas. I have seen well respected members post facts, only to have them disputed by less knowledgeable and incorrect members. The frustration level has to be huge.

Placeholder-just got a call (at work).

      Back from the call.

Maybe that is part of the answer also, I am a mechanic for an airline. We don't guess when it comes to maintenance-things are done to a very precise standard. It's hard not to carry that into other aspects of my life-perhaps that's unfair in a forum titled the Outhouse. Again, I'm mostly thinking of the forum as a whole. I enjoy the social aspects of a group of people, but not at the expense of an accurate source of information. Sorry.

I guess it's just a case of differing expectations for this place, I get the feeling that a lot of folks are here just to shoot the breeze. I want something that I can't get from my normal day, which is information about high performance cars. I guess I am out of place, and as I mentioned before, I will be staying out of the general forums from now on. That will probably be the best solution, as I am not going to change anyones mind, nor is anyone going to change mine. Consider this my "95 theses", just tacking it to the door and moving on.

Cody, I won't get into it with you here. Maybe at another track day we can get together and talk it out. I'd hope you could be mature.

Derek and Allen, sorry to turn a simple post into a headache. Chalk it up to growing pains, my ornryness, or just the wrong question on the wrong day.

Some of you guys I'll see at the track, the rest of you I wish the best and no ill will. Good luck with all of your projects!
