Are the supplied shims in the kit needed when using the oe replacement umbrella style stme seals with the integral spring seats? If so, where in the world do the fit?

HUH ? what are you talking about. Most small block Chevy run oring seals with oil shedders. The steel cap over the spring. IF you run less the shedder then using umbrella seals are recommended.
If you are installing the LT$ HOT cam for a small block Chevy, order up a set of the LT4 light weight retainers, best retainer for cash and lighter than stockers and they clear most seals.
That cam will run with Z-28 springs fine if set to proper seat height, adjusted with spring shims. One thing to make sure is to verify enough spring height, and so far most heads I have seen OTHER THAN VORTECH HEADS can handle Z springs and LT4 retainers with room to spare.
If you run 1.5 rockers it comes in at 0.492 lift, with 1.6 it 0.525 and with 1.65 rockers it specs out at 0.541 lift.
My 78 C10 has a 355 roller, 4 bolt main and have had a HOT roller cam in a sbc since I read about it in 97-98.
This is second long block it has been in.
Pulls hard, will run with a Qjet, and gets great mileage.
