      PlastiDip

Well after having a local powdercoater quote me 175 per wheel to powder the centers black I decided I'd try the thing all the import guys rage about: Plastidip!

I was a little hesitant to try this on brand new wheels, but a neighbor who does it told me it's great and I had nothing to worry about. I found if you use masking tape you have to pull the tape very soon after applying the dip and that can be quite troublesome since the dip wants multiple coats so it can remove easy. If a coat sets up before you remove the tape it won't work. I thought I'd share how I did my wheels..

This is what the wheel looked like. I like the polished look but it's hard to maintain.

First I sprayed multiple coats of plastidip. Each wheel used 1.5 cans. The more you add the easier it is to remove.

Then I lightly cut around the center section.

Then I started to peel away the dip on the outside portion of the wheel.

Finally, here is a video of me removing the outside portion of the dip:

A friend of mine just did his whole car - turned out better than I thought it would. One of the guys here at work did his wheels - it's a good option on wheels, especially if you just want to see how they look

I did the wheels on my daily nearly a year ago. It still looks good. I am about to peel it off and try for charcoal with the glossifier over it. Fun stuff. When I get my wheels for my pt build I may try to do a smoked gold. That way I can order a normal color wheel and still change up the look every now and then.

I haven't tried the glossifier yet so let me know how it turns out. I did notice you can put some turtle wax ice on the black and it makes it gloss until it wears off..

I also dipped my wife's minivan's wheels since she never washes it. So far it looks a lot better when coated in brake dust, and after a recent automatic car wash visit it looked good as new.

I agree, especially if you just want to do the inside of the wheel. Another cool thing I've seen was done by a local guy with a black zo6. He coated the front bumper. It looked like a supertight black bra on the front of the car. After lovebug season (a Floridian nuisance) he just peals it off!

I am actually doing a refrigerator as we speak. We just moved into a new house, got a new range and dishwasher, but couldn't bring ourselves to spend $2-3K on a new matchy-matchy fridge. So instead of having a giant, ugly almond box, I am paticdiping it in black and doing the handles in a gray. I'll post pictures when I am done.

Is it just me or does everybody have problems spraying this stuff. I've bought 2 cans and neither spray very good. Is it suppose to spray like paint?

it's very thick so you have to shake it for like 3 minutes so it turns watery then do a couple of sprays on a something and then it should spray just like any spray paint. First time I used it I didn't shake it and it was a pain to try and paint with but then I read the directions LOL

OK, going to try again tomorrow. I'm ready to go to bed right now, recovering from a weekend trip to St Louis with 52 high school kids. Man, I'm wore out!!

It likes to fish eye on the first coat, just do a few lite coats then you can lay it down pretty heavy after that.

Andrew I look forward to the fridge pictues. After using this stuff I started looking for other things I could coat. The cat could be next. ;)

I plan on using plastidip to see if I want a vinyl roof or not.

That stuff is great. I did my trim and wheels. Looks way too good to go on so easy.

I used the Plastidip on my wife's wheels and it turned out pretty impressive. The only issue I have with PlastiDip is the limited number of colors. Alsa Corp also sells spray on wrap like PlastiDip but it is available in just about any color and finish you could want including metalics.

I have a friend/co-worker who has had his Mustang plastidipped for about a year. He's about to peel it to change the color. I'd say it has held up VERY well. He bought the spray gun and said it produces a much better finish than the aerosol cans do.

I used this stuff to black out ALL the chrome on the wife's car before it was even a week old. And if we want to trade it in, it peels right off! Front grille is just starting to show some wear, but that's after 20k and 2 winters. Laid it on a little heavier on the stock wheels and Blizzaks and it's perfect.
