You should buy the ATSG manual plus a quality rebuild kit and have at it. These manus are awesome. I rebuilt the 4L60E in my wife's truck with one and had zero problems. 1st auto trans I had ever worked on. It's basically step by step instructions on how to rebuild the transmission.

Great, would you consider transtar brand to be a good kit? northernautoparts has one that seems to have alot of parts (#36008a) for $93. also can add a shift kit for$25. and they have the atsg manual for$25.
From what i have found the only special tool i might need is a trans lip seal tool? Were you able to do yours with just basic tools?

      Here's what seems like a decent write-up.

Looks like you'll also need a clutch spring compressor. I had to buy several special tools for the 4L60E, but that's a totally different design. Buy the ATSG manual first, it will tell you what special tools you need.

I have no experience with Transtar. I have heard good things about Monster Transmission though. I can't recall where I bought my rebuild kit, it was a few years ago.

You might also look into Performance Automatic...

I've used one of their C4s before with good success.
