      Tire and wheels

I've been searching the interweb for days looking for a streetable set of summer performance tires and wheels for my 66 mustang. I've rolled the rear fender lips and massaged the inner forward portion of the wheel housing, as well as cut the fender lips on the front fenders down to a quarter inch. I want to drive the car to the track (+/- 100mi) , autocross or drag strip, and drive home on the same tires. . . . (without looking like a riceburner.)

I'm hoping to get 235/45 on the front and 255/45 on the rear but understand I may have to go down to a 40. Currently have a set of 225/60/15 for daily use and wet weather. This extra set will be for street/track use. I'm overwhelmed by the piles of salescrap, or being stuck on a webpage based on a generic car search.

Wheels, I'm looking for a rim that's 17X8 with 4.75 backspacing, 5X4.5 bolt pattern, and under 20lbs. Budnik really catches my eye. Anyone have suggestions? Weight is a concern.

Tires, yikes! Talk about too much information. Looking for a good summer performance tire for the track thats street legal and will keep the cops off me without raising an eyebrow.

      Tire and wheels

What's your budget for wheels? There are a lot of companies out there.

BFG rival tires are great but not for the rain.

I have a '66 coupe that is currently completely disassembled and have narrowed the rear frame rails, mini tubbed, Rod and Custom MII front susp. among other stuff I am going with Boze Lateral G's but am having a difficult time with tires I know out back I will be going with a 315 x 35 but not sure up front and I don't think anyone makes a matching front tire that also makes a 315

For wheels, I couldn't help you. It depends on the real look you want for your car. For tires, here's my experience. I've got some BFG Sport Comp 2 tires on the rear of my daily driver '00 Z28 right now. Very good tires in terms of wear and the traction isn't too bad. I can pretty much light them up at will, but they do handle the twisties well for a 300 tread wear tire. I have Continental Extreme Contact DW tires up front. I use to have them all the way around, but a flat and the shop not having them available didn't help any. That's why the BFG's are on the rear. I preferred the Continentals, honestly. Not a loud tire, and it grips better than expected. Traction is very good for a 300 tread wear tire as well. They have great feel and are pretty damn confident in the wet. This is definitely a tire that I recommend for performance street. I haven't taken them on the track, but I hope to soon.

kencobra, suggest you contact Mike Maeir racing, he's running a 66 coupe with 315's on the rear, and I'm sure he'd be kind enough to share his thoughts on the front tires. I was recently there looking at his shop and suspension hardware. Super nice guy! It appeared to be a 285/30 on the front, but I'm prob wrong. very short memory on my end, I believe the issue was clearing the control arm ball joint with a larger wheel and still getting the desired turning radius. www.maieracing.com

wheels, I'm very surprised at the weight of some of these wheels, 23, 24, 26 lbs. Most of the lightweight wheels I'm see have that meet my objective are all too large (>18") and major pos offset. My offset is only 3/4" (4.75" backspacing). What companies should I be targeting to find a good looking light weight wheel under 20 lbs. So far I've found Weld (17.1lb), looking for others.
