brushed bumpers

has anyone gotten rid of the shiny chrome on their bumpers and trim and gone with the brushed look? the guys on fast n loud did it to a lincoln in the first season and kinda like the idea for my chevelle. any pics or input?

ridetech did that I think with their latest Camaro, same with on the hood. It's bare steel, sanded nicely, and clear coated.

We do it here at work (sheet metal fab. shop) all the time on aluminum. I think it would work the same on chrome. Use a 3M/ Scotch-brite pad and some WD-40. Different grits of pads will give you a finer or coarser grain to the finish.

I'm going to cut down my (aluminum) bumpers this winter and brush them and my wheel centers. I HATE constantly polishing them. I'll post a thread when I do it.

There are a few threads on here about it and I'm considering it for my car but, it is pricey. From what I've discovered, the chrome platers will plate it in nickel, put the pattern on the bumper by sanding it or using scotch brite pads and then sealing it with the chrome plating. I asked the Advanced Plating folks about cost and astronomical.

I just blasted & powedercoated all the exterior trim, bumpers, handles, inner fenders, core support, control arms, subframe, and a few other pieces in gunmetal color. Its going on a 67 firebird im building. Every car I've built to this point I have used all the chrome stainless trim... because I prefer it. Some of my buddies & my wife told me I always do the same theme. I'm just one of those guys that once I find something I like I stay with it. So I figured I would do something new. The parts were mostly all original pieces. The chrome on the bumbers & handles was worn but they were otherwise in good shape. The car will be some shade of red, but not sure exactly which one yet. Its down to bare metal so I'll have to decide pretty soon. If you have any unuseable old parts, do a few test runs & see if you like how they look on your car. What are you working on?

Guys thanks so much for all the advice! I have a 72 chevelle it's fully restored so everything is in perfect shape I'm just not a huge fan of chrome... It's red with black racing stripes and I'm about to drop in my ls and lower it an inch or 2. I would do all the work myself so all I need to pay for is some grit and a lot of man hours lol here's how she sits now

dang this seems like it will not be an easy process like i though it would be. i figured i could just lightly sand the bumper and maybe put a light clear coat over but if they're saying its a whole chroming process I'm not gonna waste my time

I would be interested in seeing the powdercoat pictures as well. Because of the cost I'm leaning that direction or maybe even going fiberglass bumpers.

I was figuring it would be less because I thought they stopped a stage early in the repair.. Maybe adding that grain is a big job.. I have a project I really want to do this on. If anybody finds out anything let me know.

It's actually an extra step and they have to do all of the work that they would do for plating plus, put the pattern in it. There is a place in Philadelphia that does it for a bit more reasonable price than Advanced.
