Water temp gauge question

Evening all. My water temp gauge as well as electric cooling fan are not reading/turning on. I have a fan T-stat in the bottom of the radiator (180*) and once the car hits that temp, the fan turns on. Also my temp gauge is not reading. My wiring from the gauge is going to the wiring post on the T-stat. So basically the gauge is sharing the same post with the T-stat. Now, from dealing with the FAST EFI system and their sensors, you cannot "share" a post with another sensor or else you will not get a reading. I'm assuming that this is what's happening with my situation? Thanks again.
