I have read about acid-etch primers for a while, but I've been trying to find a product that could etch the bare metal without priming. Does this seem like it would work well for that? I often have parts sandblasted and like to do my rust removal without primer on, but don't want to have flash rusting.

That will work fine. I use that and POR's Metal Ready all the time. Use it with rubber gloves and some scotchbrite pads. Works wonders on light surface rust
