17X11 ZR1 what size wheel adapter? 69 Firebird

I have a 69 Firebird with drum rear brakes. What size wheel adapter could i use to make them fit with out doing mini tube. my ZR1 are 36mm offset 17X11 heres a picture. From my searches i seen most people say dont go more than 5.75" backspacing. What size adapter will work?

      Hi Stroked,
If you know offset and wheel width, you can determine current backspace. It's been discussed quite a few times on the forum if you're needing more detail.

      Backspace = ((wheel size + 1) / 2) - (wheel offset / 25.4)
plugging in your wheel you'll end up with ~4.58" of backspace. To get the 5.75" of backspacing you'll need about a 1 3/16" adapter.

I would start by measuring your car and determining what kind of space you have to work with. I typically shoot for at least 3/16" clearance to the front, and at least 1/2" clearance in the rear. When determining clearances you also have to keep tire size in mind as well. Usually your tire will overhang your wheel by a small distance. I just finished fitting a 275 tire on a 9.5" wheel and end up with .2" overhang off of the wheel.

For this wheel to work on your firebird, it will require work to your inner wheel house.

Ahh i see, so basically if i had a 7.5 backspacing i would use 2.5" adapter. I'll have to measure out the rear wheel well to see if it will even fit. I'll measure it out and the actual backspacing of the rear wheel too.

By the way, i been reading that people with 17X8 running zero offset have no issues on front. I might go that route on front.

The tire over hang your talking about must be "section width". I dont mind pounding in the rear wheel well a little just as long as i can get my 315/35 17's tires on without cutting or welding. i wont be running tail tips to the rear that should give me more clearance maybe.

Hopefully there is a little more room under the firebird. I have 17x9's under the back of my Nova with 275 on them. They fit good, but it took a fender lip roll and 3 different spacers to figure it out. I ended up with a 1.5" spacer on the drivers side and a 1" spacer on the passenger side.

More info in this thread that might help out:

An 11" will not fit in a '69 without tubbing.

Largest I heard anyone manage was a 10" but the fender lip was rolled.

68Forumula is correct, there is no way to fit an 11" wide wheel under a first-gen F-body without some sort of mini-tub, full tub, etc. Spacers are somewhat of a moot point. The only option short of some sort of tub kit would be to lift it with longer shackles and let the tires hang out the sides like the drag guys do.

What I would do is base your dimensions on a 17x9.5 wheel with 5.5" back space. So if those wheels are currently a 7" back space you will need a 1.25" spacer. Be sure to use a good quality hubcentric spacer.

Awesome, that sounds great i'll look into 1.25" spacer.

Can you recommend a place to buy the spacer from, ive never bought one before. Would the hubcentric spacer work on drum brakes.

Google MotorSport-Tech. He'll custom make anything you need. Be sure to tell him they need to be hubcentric. The material he uses is Alcoa 6061t6 billet aluminum. IMO thet aren't cheap but great quality.

I'm pretty sure they will work with drum brakes and I'm not 100% sure but once you go to disk brakes the back space may change a bit.

Also, if you intend to use a 275/40 up front prepare to cut some of your inner wheel well out. Not a big deal and wont be noticed.
