I like your idea using the original paint....some scuffpads, reducer and metal dust can go along way creating an "aged" paint job... Shooting the enitire car then aging it "uniformly" may be easier than trying to blend new panels/parts with the original aged paint. I had a project in college aging some military parts....I even used salt water from the ocean while scuffing the parts after paint. haha. You may want to check out some Guitar forums for aging techniques.... Either way, the project is looking great Ron!

The whole cage is 1 5/8" chromoly, if I remember correctly SCCA requires 1 3/4", so no its not built specifically for SCCA. I designed it to stiffen the car without adding too much weight, and for head room, vision, saftey, and ease getting in and out of the car. This is a driver, built to run in the A.S.S. (LOL). This will definitly be one of the safest cars in the series, and once I close everything up and put carpet(yes carpet) on the floor, it won't look near as busy.

The fuel tank has worried me since I dreamed up this build, I really wasn't sure how tight the rear compartment was going to be until the watts bars went in, now that they are in I can get it figured out. I think I can buy a poly tank from Speedway that has no holes in it yet, and stand it up rather then laying it flat, or build one out of aluminum. Either way I will have to fab the internal fuel pump and trough like I did in the Mustang.

Ron, I'm sort of well versed in finding "skinny" fuel cells...this might help.
http://www.atlinc.com/pdfs/Racing/2012-ATL-RACING-CATALOG-web%2014.pdf
All of ATL's A,B and C cells share the same footprint, only the height is different to create higher capacity. No one else (that I've found) makes a narrower cell.

That is a customer of DC Performance, a really over the top build, will be an 8 second street car. DC does mostly super fast drag cars. There are alot of 7,8,and 9 second door bangers with tags on them in this area. Do you remember when a 12 sec. car dominated the streets? I sure do.

Tis slick. How is the exhaust going to run? I know you have that worked out in a mental blueprint.

Ron S
12-26-2011, 07:00 AM
You got the mental part right. It will run along the torque arm on the drivers side, and alond the driveshaft on the other, in 3", go up and over the rear, and exit behind the rear wheel. Its kind of nice I get to do that from above before the floors are installed. I think the trans mount and exhaust will be the next thing as soon as the cage is done.

Does that torque arm mount just unbolt?

Andrew

Ron S
12-26-2011, 09:59 AM
Yeah Andrew its the torque arm/trans mount so it kind of has to come out. I was a little worried about the strain of the torque arm, so that crossmember of made of 3/16", and the bolt together section is extra beefy, I need to study at weight watchers!!!!

Mike Holleman
12-26-2011, 03:47 PM
So it will be above that lower subfloor? That's cool. Kinda slot carisk. Is that a word? The Elky has very high exhaust because it is all solid mounted and exits ahead of the axle. Now all you need are diffusers and some topside aero work and we can take that bad boy to Bonneville. This build is fun to watch and I know you are having fun.

Should all be tucked up pretty tight, just started the X bracing behind the watts, don't know why, but I really love the X's in a cage, makes it super strong and it just looks sexy.

If I remember correct, its a Pro Tools notcher. Dominic is a master on that notcher, most of the time it only requires a scotch brite pad to clean up the ends, and its perfect.

Still crazy busy at work, drilled the spot welds yesterday to remove the front clip. Originally I was going to try to use the sheetmetal inner fenders and core support, but figure I might as well have a jungle gym in the front to match the one in the back. My new game plan is to make a new firewall which will be part of the chassis with pedals and column. I need to set the engine and trans back in the car to see how big the dog house will be, really hoping I can use the original dash.

I bet your busy around now. Hit me up when you get a min.

Good idea on keeping the steering and firewall all on the chassis. You have to drive it without the body at-least once lol.

Ron S

The cage work is about done, lifted the body back off to finish welding. Will set the engine back in this weekend to run the exhaust, and get the firewall built. Big tires are mounted on the front, just has rollers on the back.

People used to think I worked fast when I had 30 hours a week to devote to the car hobby (pre-children) but you are really gittin' her done. I would like to see some more x-bracing int he floor though, I know you have that torque arm in the way, but when I was doing my chassis' in Grape analysis, the x-bracing in the floor from corner to corner was huge for stiffness. YOu have those nice solid steel floors on the outer rockers but they are not tied together. If it were me I'd bring a tube from each "floor boxed corner" and bring them as close into the trans x-member as possible. Probably not even possible on the front but there is definitely room in the rear. Just a thought.

This is the first time I've seen this type suspension, so I'm waiting eagerly!!

It really is just a modified version of the 2002 Camaro, really simplistic, durable setup. Of course the underslug frame is not mandatory to run this setup, I just thought it was really rigid for the chassis, and kinda cool.

Hey Ron,
I was wondering if you would talk more about the watts link and how you have designed it. The other question I have is where did you get the "football" link on your watts link? Any info/pictures would be great. Thanks, Ron BTW Thank You for all of you build pictures between both the Mustang and the AMX. You have inspired me to get out in the garage and start learning how to fab all the ideas in my head! Truly inspirational!!

You know how it is, logistics are everything. This is the first build I've ever done that has had any 2 hands but mine working on it, but I can't lie, Domonic (DC Performance) has gotten the cage done in 1/4 the time it would have taken me, and I'm loving the work they did. My wife is a saint, my biggest fear in life is that one day she will wake up and realize what a putz I am. This car is rolling pretty fast, but amazingly its another fairly cheap build.

The chassis I built myself, the last time I checked a decked out Morrison chassis was around 20K, the cage I haven't got the bill on yet. Its funny there was a chain of events which had me working 14 hr days for a month straight, right at the time DC Performance had a scheduling window, I jumped at it, and am so glad I did, probably moved the project 2 months ahead of schedule. After this weekend its back home, and the metal work starts, thank goodness I'm back to a normal 8 hr day at work, and can get 10 hrs. or so a week of wrenching time.

The football came from Fays2, its about $100, the design is pretty straight forward. Put the fins on the Dana cover to allow the football to be adjusted above and below axle center line. This stuff truely isn't rocket science, if you check out some of the chassis design books.

Got the body back on, and the engine and trans in it for mock up, I think I will have to go with the shorter torque arm, just too busy with that magnum 6 speed. Trying to deside what I'm going to do for power, my buddy Frank is trying to talk me into twin turbos, it really would be cool, but would add alot of weight.

It just looks that way in the pics, the turning radius is exactly the same as a C6 Corvette, and what I like is even at full lock that the tires don't rub anywhere.

The car is looking good. I built an underslung chassis for a 35 Ford pickup a few years back and it really worked out quite well.

Leave the long torque arm. The longer it is, the less likely it will be to brake hop. I say brake hop but its the violent downshifts that really do it. When that happens, sometimes the only thing you can do is throttle out of it.....kind of the last thing you want to do when you are trying to slow down.

Keep up the inspiring work.

Yes the center is the transmission crossmember, so it has to be removable. There is an X that goes between the trans crossmember and the rear crossmember, but it can't go in until I put the trans crossmember where it belongs. I've always considered myself a pretty decent welder, but I think Dominic at DC Perfrmance could teach me a few things about tigging tubing, the welds are a work of art. Its taken me alot of years to learn that you can't beat a man at his trade.

I have been really enjoying this build, I knocked the chassis out pretty quickly, then Dominic got on the cage really fast and didn't complain once about how anal I was about bar placement. Now I've traded off some work with my buddy Frank, I'm fabricating the center console for his twin turbo project and he's doing the exhaust on mine. Its been fun working with other craftsman on these projects, usually I'm all alone in my garage with nobody to BS with. Kinda sounding like a baby, but truthfully it hasn't felt like work once.

I agree. I have the patience, I just know I will never have the time to spend on mastering it. I can MIG and it looks decent and I never worry about failures but I simply don't have the free hours to put in to make them look perfect every time under every condition (like upside down). I feel TIG welding would be similar, look OK, strong but not the prettiest. I guess that's why I own a grinder.

I have built alot of cars through the years, but I have NEVER been so tortured trying to get exhaust to fit. I had a choice to make, the car could either have exhaust or seats. The torque arm eats up so much realestate that it makes it damn near impossible to have exhaust. Frank and I contemplated about 10 different designs, we even thought about a single 4" exhaust set up. In the end I cut a chunk of the frame and tucked the pipes under the driveshaft down the right side side, standing both mufflers on end, leaving just enough room for seats, and everything else. The tailpipes will go under the rear, and exit behid the passenger rear tire. Frank was hurried to get some pipes in before one of us changed our minds.

getting structure back to the torque arm chassis mount looks fun!

Are you going to have any issues with sounds levels at autocrosses? If so design in a way to point the exhaust exit away from the DB meter. I have turn down under the car and I can angle them to point away from the DB meter. My small motor hit 95 dB at 3500rpm and full throttle.

That actually gets another 2"x2" crossmember that has the mount on it. Its out to get the exhaust eyebrows put in it, once its installed it will get an X brace out of 1 5/8" chromoly between that and the trans crossmember. When something sets this low, every single part becomes a challenge to install.

Love the Dart, I'm a Mopar guy at heart. The chassis is around 4.5 inches to the ground, and nothing hangs below that. Although the exhaust was challenging, the pictures don't do it justice. Each pipe has probably has 6 manderal bends in it, and it follows the shape of the transmission perfectly.

Got the torque arm crossmember built, exhaust eyebrows were a pain but its done. On the fab tech side, if you place a peice of flat bar under the welded area, and clamp it down while welding it helps to keep the part from ending up shaped like a banana.

I really couldn't build the coilover mounts, until the exhaust and other stuff was mounted. I can now get the mounts built, and it should be more apparent. Unfortunatly I'm switching gears on to the Mustang for a bit, RTTS is right around the corner.

Hey Ron,

Before I swapped over from the Moser floater setup to GMR's setup, I had stopped into a Circle Track speed shop and located a set of steel driveplates that would replace the Moser plates. They already have the holes drilled for 1/2" studs and are setup for the 24-spline axles. They are actually a better design for something that may get a lot of miles on the road because the center snout area where the axle spline is located is not "lightened" like the Moser unit and it would have a much less chance of breaking than the Moser unit. The only drawback to the unit is the $70.00 (each) price tag. But... if you want some insurance of not having a problem of having the 5/8" holes in the driveplate with 1/2" studs, it would probably fix all your problems.

The guy at the shop said they were made by Coleman Racing (who I have heard actually builds the floater hubs for Moser) but I can't locate them on Coleman's site. The only thing I don't know for sure is the placement of the 2 little set screws. I really don't think they serve a whole lot of purpose if the plates have 1/2" holes that line up the plate and then you torque your wheels down... They pretty much don't do anything else but hold the driveplates in place when there isn't a wheel on the car. To me, the drive plate would hold itself in place with the 5 studs holding it in place. With all that being said, the two set screws may be located exactly in the right place. I would just have to carry one of my Moser floating hubs up there to see how they match up...

If you are interested, I can make my way back over to that shop one day and get you some pictures or more information. Let me know if you still need to come up with a solution for your concern on this.

Ron S
03-03-2012, 05:15 AM
Thanks Ray, the one thing I love about this site is how everyone trys to watch out for one another. I was actually was talking to Coleman, and Mike Holleman who runs that setup this week. Colemans website isn't the greatest as far as pictures go, I found this pic in a Google search.

I'm agonizing on what to do with my Mustang for a floater. Love the Dana thats in the car,the only part on the car I know I'll never have to touch.
Can't deside wether to lop the ends of the Dana and make it a floater, or switch to a 9" floater. While running a 4 speed with direct drive fourth, I really need a higher rear gear, and I am as high as a Dana will allow 3.54, I'd like to run a 3.20ish gear which is no problem with the 9"rears. Like the Moser DBP setup which is similar to GMR with its bearing seperation, it just doesn't use as big a bearing, and I do hate the driveplates. This is messed up, I think I'm getting my threads mixed up. LOL

Hey Ron,

That's not exactly the plate I was referring to... Although, it's very close. I'm sure Coleman makes a number of different varieties.

Here's a picture I found of the one I was describing. As you can see, Speedway Motors sells the same drive plate. I'm sure Coleman makes them for a number of companies to their specs. It's just like other products where a lot of different companies sell something but they are actually produced by one or two companies... Like the old VCR's...

At least these have the correct 1/2" holes instead of the 5/8" holes in the Moser units. I asked Moser if I could get a custom set ordered with 1/2" hole in them and he told me they weren't really interested in catering to the Pro-Touring market.. They were a race car product company... In today's times, I don't think I would be pushing business away. I'd be looking for ways to increase different market niches...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/100_011220Medium-1.jpg

You see how much beefier it is around the 24-spline axle and hasn't been lightened like the Moser one...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/file_29_6-1.jpg

My asphalt circle track buddy said if they were to break from some shock load, they crack in one of these areas that have been lightened. I know we will give these things much less abuse than the racers but it may be an alternative for you... The two countersunk holes for the set screws should be located correctly but probably wouldn't be a big deal to make some new ones if you had to...

JUST SOME MORE INFO TO PONDER!! :hammer::rolleyes::banghead:

Hey Ron I have a small question...
I was reading about certifying roll cages, because I don't know anything about them, and I understood the cross bar in your main hoop (in case of driver only) needs to be up on the drivers side (or for driver and co-driver need an X) - But on yours it's the opposite up towards passenger -think it was specifically an Austrailian guide from FIA, just assuming the cross brace was to prevent the driver from being crushed in a roll over, and assuming it would be the same here...

The roll cage isn't legal for SCCA, your correct the diagonal should be on the drivers side to be legal, and the door bars aren't legal either. This car is really a street car, legal to run in the A.S.C. series. I designed the cage more for head room, vision, saftey, and ease entering, and exiting the car. The diagonal definately adds to the ridgidity of the main hoop, I just didn't feel like beaning my head on it, due to the tight confines of that car. I still think this car will be one of the safest cars in the A.S.C. series.

I use the Coleman drive plates with 1/2" studs and a 5*4.5 bolt pattern. THey are from their mod-lite package. Part # is 21634

If you have a different bolt pattern it will be a different plate, but just call them they can figure it out. My version has been lightened a bit too but not as much as that moser version. Also I am using a steel plate, not sure if you were using aluminum or not. You're obviously not worried about weight with that Dana60 in there :)

Thanks, I hope it works out well. I am trying to keep it simple, but I always find something I don't like or want to redo already, lol. Like, I really want to put a cage in the car but, to be safe on the street the seat will be to low for me to see over the dash, plus it doesn't play well with the stock dash and headliner.

I like the coleman drive plates, hopefully they make them for the 5x5 grand national hubs I have, with 1/2 holes.

Nice build Ron, I am looking forward to seeing how you tackle the sheet metal. You really go heavy duty on the drive train, full floater dana 60 with a track link, you built an AMX around a BFH.

Man, this car is way to wicked not to pass the top sanctioning bodies inspection.

I don't know Todd, do you really want an all out race car,SCCA legal door bars and all. I know I don't, there is just something about a badass door banger street car. If I wanted an AIX car, I'd probably build something more cheap/practicle for racing like a 4th gen Camaro.

Just got back from a week in the tropics for my daughters wedding, I should be able to focus a little on this car now, man is my life busy anymore. Had this thing stowed at my buddy Franks place, I'm sure hes ready to see it gone, and I'm chomping to start bending some metal.

Hi Ron, glad you are back at the AMX, the sh*t yellow patina will look good I think, High tech stuff under a none appealing paint will be the trick, below a pic of a Mustang I baught from the US for a good customer of mine, wasn't a fan of the color until I saw it in person, it looks good with some matte black accents.

Trying to get an idea of what this thing is going to look like with a couple inches knocked off the nose and an inch of wheelbase added in the front. Moved the original wheel opening up, and forward to see what it will look like. Unfortunatly th original wheel opening doesn't have near enough flare for those 335's, but it at least gives me an idea. I do think it is an improvement over the original.

I think those proportions will look better. I always thought the AMX looked a bit odd with the chopped off back end. This gives some balance. I wish I was gutsy enough to cut on my Firebird fenders like that. I may buy a rusty set and see what I can come up with. I really want a subtle flare over the stockers.

It will be LS powered, but I've haven't nailed that down yet.

Did some measuring tonight, the car is 48" tall, about the same as the Mustang, but it is 12.5" shorter then the Mustang, and the 66 Mustang wasn't considered a big car back in the day. It has a 105" wheelbase vs. the Mustangs 108". Experimental ? wonder how it will all work.

Got the hood starting to fit, and wanted to show the mustang differences. Although the cars are ther same height to the roof, the belt line on the Mustang is much lower, making the hood on the AMX set higher,in turn making the whole car seem higher. I do like the wheelbase changes, think it really helps the car, though the purists will probably hate it. I think it was Jimi Day who said you could fit all the AMX fans into a Volkswagon.

Car is looking great, Ron. You've got good "vision" for making vehicles look better with somewhat "subtle" changes. Not that the Mustang or this project is subtle, but they're not not big, bling, added-wing kinda changes either. They're tasteful, enhancing changes. Keep it up.

Keep up the good work and this thing may not even be ugly when done ;-) If they would've moved the diffy back 40 some years ago we may still be driving AMC's. I drove a Concord for years and honestly was the most reliable car I've ever owned, seconded by my '82 Z28 Pace Car. My 78 Honda Accord was the most unreliable. Seems I may be living in a parallel universe to most...

Loved the quote about the Volkswagen!

Amazing work! For the hood, maybe consider adapting the later Javelin cowl hood? The earlier pictures with the raised hood looks way more aggressive than the flat hood ... but maybe then wants the whole Javelin front clip ... maybe leave that for the next AMC project :) ...

74 Javelin AMX with cowl hood:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here's a post on the AMC Forum where a guy adapted one to an early Javelin, which is basically the same front end as your AMX. Repro fibreglass hoods are available.

I love the fenders on the newer AMX's(big american bulges), but kind of dig the original hood on the 69. Still amazed the early, and late AMX's sported the same doors and trunk lid.

AMC Racer
07-06-2012, 08:53 AM
There are a few early AMXs modified with the later front end, but the proportions aren't quite right .... for sure would look better with the wheelbase stretch like your AMX and maybe flares on the rear to match the front and a shorter nose .... so keeping your original fenders and hood likely works best. I'm sure whatever you do will be cool.

Ron,

Sometime back I played around via the computer with Coloradoamx's beautiful later AMX and shortened it to a two seater but not quite as much as the original two seater. I also took a bunch of the front overhang off and made the bulges a little more subtle and took a bit out of the roof.

Its 22 gallon, had a heck of a time finding something that would fit in that oddly shaped space.

Fuel tank just came in from ATL, its a shame I have no time to work on it. Space restraints made it very tall and skinny.

Well, one good thing is since it is tall and skinny, you will have more usable fuel in the tank because it won't slosh away or uncover the pickup so easy. It looks like you are running an intank pump, if you don't mind me asking, what pump(s) are you running?

Car is coming out nice, can't wait to see it after you get some time to work on it.

Thanks,
Jon

It uses the Bosch HP pump, its good to 700 HP. Here is a link to ATL's site scroll down to the bottom.

Really guys, its not anything to get excited about. I just inherited a 1969 shortbed 4x4 Dodge pickup setting on a newer 80's chassis, 5.7 hemi efi., 727, 205 t/c and Dana 60's front and back. Its a really cool old hillbilly truck, which I'm trying to get running before I switch back to the AMX. I'll post some pics as soon as I take some.

I don't mean to sound overly negative. Your work is great & the frame looks really cool. I realize you are just working with what you've got, but it's almost a shame to take an AMX & put so many man hours into making it into a Javelin without a back seat. I don't know if I would have been brave enough. Good for you! Maybe I would have spared the AMX & modded a Javelin? Umm, ehh, I don't know.. I guess they're both about as rare these days. I tend to be a little too nostalgic, I guess. LOL I'm sure it will be really cool when you're done!

so many projects to do and so little time to do it in....we all have the same "problem" I guess.
