Project Sabre, a 1971 Cutlass Pro-Touring car for the average Joe

Rotors were dropped off yesterday at the shop that is going to cryo-treat them, and the spindles are at the coater's getting cleaned up and coated. Hopefully those will be ready in about 2-3 weeks, as to save $$ I'm having both done as they have a larger run (reduces the cost when done with other orders).

For the engine, looks like I was given the wrong lower mounts, which placed the engine too far back against the firewall. I have some replacements arriving that should move them to the correct spot (guessing the previous shop gave me someone else's mounts, and I think I know the guy, so will be sending those to him). Once I get that nailed down, I can finish up with the drivetrain and move forward. Baby steps, but at least its progress and I know its being done right with no more mistakes.

When you say "lower mounts" are you talking about the frame mounts? If this is what you are referring to, I think they only come "short and narrow" or "tall and wide". The Chevy and Olds mounts sit in different spots on the crossmember, so lots of ppl with leave the frame mounts connected to the motor to find the right postion before bolting it down. I had to drill holes in the crossmember to get my motor in the proper mounting position in reference to my firewall.

I'm talking about the lower half of the conversion engine mounts, the part that bolts directly to the crossmember. I also received the replacement Musclebar and will install that as well. Ordered a few other parts and am working on cleaning some others getting ready for a lot of upcoming work. I think the biggest thing I'm not looking forward to is wiring the car, but the job has to be done ;-)

I am going to pick up the spindles from the coater's and the rotors from the cryo treatment, and will try to get those installed over the next few days, along with the Ridetech updated Musclebar. Also setting aside time to move the engine & trans and try the other mounts to see if that gives me more clearance at the firewall.

Got in some good time on Sabre this weekend. I moved the engine & trans forward by installing the second set of motor mounts, so now there is more clearance between the engine and the firewall. The previous shop must not have checked for the bellhousing or transmission, as the reverse lock-out is resting against the trans tunnel (turns out they didn't have it installed during test fitting), and I don't believe the upper bellhousing bolts can be removed as they will hit the firewall before they are all the way out. But now the engine and trans are fully installed. David is going to do the repairs to the firewall in a few weeks, and after that I will finish assembling the top of the engine and the engine wiring.

I reinstalled the newly powder coated spindles, which look great. I also picked up the rotors that I had cryo-treated (both the powder coating and cryo treatment were done at Pro-Cryo in Cumming, GA). I will install the rotors just before we wrap up the brakes. I installed the wider Ridetech Musclebar up front, and reconnected everything. I still have to trim the front bolt on the back of the steering arm, as it is required to clear the musclebar heim joint, but I will tackle that later this week. The balljoints are torqued to spec and the caliper bracket has been installed. I had to put another coat of paint on the steering arms and tie rods, which I will reassemble and install one night this week.

Started working on the hydroboost unit. I got a used one from a pull-a-part, and used that as a core for a rebuilt one. It comes with the standard bracket, but I bought the aluminum one and the nut-tool from Tallon Hydraulics. Only problem is that all of the crescent wrenches I have are too small to fit over the end, so now I need to buy a larger wrench. Then I moved on to the pedals. I bought a set of replacement manual pedals last year, and swapped them out on my existing auto pedal holder. Turns out the set I got didn't use a bolt and nut up top, but rather a solid rod with a clip at the end. Issue there is that the rod is a larger diameter than the existing bolt, so I had to drill the openings out to fit. I'm missing a spacer, which is all I lack to install them. I will say it again, the Modo Innovations pedal covers are awesome looking!

Also, the Ridetech suspension is art, plain and simple. I spent a lot of time just staring at the components while working this weekend, and can't wait to start putting it through the rigors of autocrossing. Also, their customer service is amazing. I have had to call and email them multiple times, and they have been very fast & informative in their responses.

The last bit of work this weekend was finding the grand cherokee steering shaft and disassembling the throttle body, as both need a heavy cleaning and some paint. Over the next week I will also be installing the Kwik Performance front accessory bracket system as well the odds & ends listed above. Feels good to have some solid progress, even though it included a few steps backwards to fix stuff.

Steering arms and tie rods are loosely assembled, and I'm waiting on the larger wrench to arrive so I can swap the hydroboost brackets. Also going to pick up some tube to make a spacer for the pedal hanger and pedal arm so I can get that installed as well later this week / weekend.

Okay so this begs the question, "Why doesn't RideTech power coat the spindles from the factory?" I'm going to pull my car apart after next month and powder coat my spindles because I thought they were coated with something to keep them from rusting and of course they aren't and now mine are rusting.

Geoff, my guess is most people paint them with rattle can. I think it would be a good thing if they offered powder coating as an option for customers, unless there is a specific reason why they can't.

Booster looks good! I am hoping to go go to Peach State but don't know yet. Gotta beg that one due to cost unless I can sell something to cover it. I had a couple guys ask me about going to Run to Music City. If it do, it'll just be to spectate and ride along. Money's just too tight for me this year to participate very much.

I'm not sure which pedal set you're using, but will that rod end work? I had to cut mine off and fit it with a clevis that I got from Tallon when I ordered my firewall bracket. Also make sure you have a swivel adapter handy for your ratchet, a couple of those nuts are a PITA to tighten without it. :hammer:

No, the standard end on the booster won't work. I will have to cut off the end and then tap it, and add on some pieces to make it connect to the pedals. I may just buy mine from Tallon as well to save some time.

David is going to pick up Sabre hopefully by the weekend and will finish repairing the firewall and finishing the painting of the dash. As soon as I get it back, I'll be installing the dash pad and then dropping off with some friends to have them handle the wiring harness, installing the Vintage Air AC system and also welding up the stainless Borla exhaust. I'll be installing the BRP Muscle Rodz conversion headers this week, as well as tightening up the steering components before putting it back on the ground for transport.

All the steering components and the lower control arms / ball joints are all torqued to spec. I will finish the upper control arms today. Can't find the pitman arm, but will do a little more digging. Worst case scenario I'll buy a new one locally, then I can finish the rest of the steering from the box down. Hoping to finish the steering arm at the spindle (have to cut off the excess on the bolts) and torque to spec. I'm going to hold off on installing the rotors for a while, as I don't want them to get rusty from sitting, especially after cryo-treating them.

I also installed the MuscleRodz Hedman headers last night, and they look great!

got it back on the ground for david to pick up last saturday. When I set it down, the coils were bottomed out on the adjusters, and I had around 1/8" of clearance between the pan and the ground. Adjusted it up so there was about 2.5-3" clearance, and will still go up more once the front sheetmetal is hung. Ordered more parts that I was missing, and will install those after I get it back from David, and then its on to the wiring & Vintage Air heat / ac install, and finishing up our custom fuel tank. Then, off to the exhaust shop to have the Borla stainless system installed. Here are a few pics from Saturday (yes, it started raining):

Been a while since the last update, so here goes:

1. got the engine & trans in, headers installed and the front coils adjusted to bring the oil pan off the ground.
2. during the install, had some issues with the mounts and the engine dented the firewall trying to get it all installed.
3. got the front steering components installed and torqued, and the wheels / tires reinstalled so it could roll.
4. sent the car to my painter and had him rework the firewall and paint it, as well as the dash & rear speaker deck area
5. while in there, he saw that the motor mounts were way worse than I thought. He had to cut them apart, flip them around, and generally rework them to get it all level and installed correctly. By doing so, he was able to raise the engine and trans a little giving better ground clearance. This also centered the trans in the tunnel like it should have been (was off-center before).
6. the hard brakelines along the frame have been installed

The car is now back in my possession, and will be getting the Vintage Air A/C system and the wiring harness installed. I will also be ordering the driveshaft, and once that is in, the car will go to the exhaust shop to get the Borla stainless steel exhaust system welded & installed. After that, more wiring, fuel system and dash.

The bodywork / welding was redone and painted by David Sloan. He fixed all the stuff the last shop screwed up (nothing like paying twice for work) and did an amazing job.

A quick little update: the car is now at a friends shop in Tennessee. They are installing the wiring harness, PCM & engine harness, dash, installing the Vintage Air a/c system, and a good bit of other work. Depending on where we end up $$-wise, I may have them do a lot more when the items above are done. Hopefully I can check out the progress shortly and add some pictures.

After a LONG delay, Project Sabre is finally moving again. We had to take the car back from the last shop as they let it sit for many months and didn't do the work they said they would. I now have a good shop working on it, and they have been able to accomplish a lot in the last week. We did find that the last couple shops that had the car messed up quite a few things along the way, with incorrect bolts being installed in the suspension, parts installed in the wrong spots / backwards, and the rear axle adapter mounts weren't done properly or safely. As such, the rear axle is coming back out and we're having it all fixed the right way.

In addition to fixing the suspension installation and the rear axle mounts, they are wiring the car, installed the steering column and wheel, finished up the pedal install, hydroboost and brake installation / lines, making a driveshaft, getting the engine ready, installing the a/c system, dash, gauges, etc. The first focus is fixing what's wrong, then working mostly on the drivetrain and suspension issues, then tackling everything else.

I'm just glad to see progress, which is LONG overdue! Here are updated pictures:

we have new window fuzzies, door handles, handle & lock gaskets and a bunch of other parts coming in this / next week. The shop is going to clean up the front and back stainless trim, smooth out any dents and then polish before installing. Hopefully we'll be able to also get new glass installed depending on budget / time.

No pictures at the moment, but more parts have been ordered. Tobin at Kore3 supplied us with some brake hardware that is missing, and we also ordered a bunch of other missing parts, sensors, gaskets, etc. Also, and I'm pretty happy about this, I ordered new replacement tinted glass which the shop should have in a few days. We did find that the transmission rear tailhousing was heavily damaged by being dropped, and the rear holes won't align with the MGW shifter. The shop is trying to fix that now, but my guess is I'll have to get another tailhousing and have them swapped. Also, we found that the 'modified trans tunnel' wasn't done properly, and had to be massaged to fit the sensors & accessories on the trans. This also came up when we tried mocking up the explorer aluminum driveshaft, and we found that the rear of the tunnel was never touched. As such, I'll have to run a steel shaft for now with a smaller diameter. Eventually, I'd like to upgrade to a lighter weight shaft but at least this will get us rolling.

Just luck of the draw. I spent more time trusting people and dealing with handshakes, and expect a man to keep his word (definition of a man imho). Sadly, either by circumstance or choice, several shops weren't able to keep their word or provide quality results. The shop working on it now seems to be doing everything they say they can, and in a timely manner for the agreed upon prices (amazing). They are also pointing out missing items, improperly installed parts, and incomplete work from previous places without me having to ask, which is nice.

David was contracted to do paint and body, which he did. He is working another full time job and worked on mine as much as he could, but we both knew it was temporary. I wanted him to do more, but he didn't have time which I completely understood. I was very happy with all of his work that he did do on my car.

Yep, been working like crazy and getting this project squared away. I hope to attend a few events coming up, just have to see how work / family time plays out (family time is the most important thing for me, with two young kids)

Thanks, it's been a bumpy road at times, but also made some great contacts and friends along the way. You will not be disappointed in dealing with Jason Rushforth, both from a wheel standpoint and also from a rendering / concept design standpoint. He is truly a master at his crafts, and I would highly recommend him.

Minor update, but an update none the less. The shop got all the brake calipers and rotors install, all bearings packed, all Ridetech suspension pieces installed correctly. The window fuzzies have been installed, as well as the door latch hardware including the new handles, handle gaskets and door lock gaskets. The doors close like a new car and sound great when hitting the striker. The tinted glass has been ordered, but a week into the 'processing time' we found that the rear window was backordered. They should have that shipping in about 10 days time, so we should have glass installed within the next 2 or so weeks. The master has been installed and the hydroboost installation is done (they still have to finish up the brakelines, but the hardest part of that system is done). Getting much much closer, and very pleased with the work being done and the communication. Here are pics from this weekend:

Another update: went by the shop last week and they have all the side glass in, and the front / rear should be installed this week. They also got back the stainless steel trim that we had refurbished and polished, and that will go on with the front / rear glass. The brakes are finished and bled, and the clutch master / lines are done and they will bleed that this week. Driveshaft is done & installed, and rear axle is completed (just needs fluid). We discussed the fuel system and what all is needed, as well as what is needed for the remainder of the wiring / AC system to be installed.

Due to this, I will have to have both front wheels rehooped to adjust the backspacing and pull them in about an inch on each side. Nothing like throwing away more money for someone else' mistake.

Looks good Sparky! I wasn't aware that the Ridetech kit came with Corvette spindles? What width are those fronts, definitely not enough BS. I know most 9" wheels on A-bodies usually run 5-5.25" of BS

The shop that is working on it now called them Corvette spindles, not sure what the original application is, other than GM. I know that we are using Corvette C6 Z51 rotors, so that may be why he was calling them vette spindles. The wheels are 19x10 in the front and 20x10 in the rear.

The shop that is working on it now called them Corvette spindles, not sure what the original application is, other than GM. I know that we are using Corvette C6 Z51 rotors, so that may be why he was calling them vette spindles. The wheels are 19x10 in the front and 20x10 in the rear.

I see, he was probably confused by the brakes and the slip hat rotor on an older Muscle Car... That's a wide wheel for the front of an A-Body without an aftermarket frame. Sorry you have the added expense. Just a small bump in the road of many.

A friend of mine and I are about to start the loooooong journey of building his '71 442 W-30, which has been sitting in his yard for several years. Front and rear glass are now in, and as soon as the trim shop finds the rear trim they lost, we'll be back in business. The gas pedal is being installed, and I'll be ordering a new harness and PCM tomorrow. Turns out the one we have is for a truck layout (which was what we were originally going to run), is longer than we need, and the PCM is for a drive-by-wire set-up (which we are not using). So with that said, I have a flashed / reprogrammed PCM for drive by wire and a fully reworked harness set up for a truck intake available for sale ;)

The shop will start on the wiring in the next week or two once I get the new harness & PCM to them.

Small update: got the PCM & initial programming ordered, and they should have that shipped in the next few days. The new PSI harness was delivered Friday to the shop, and the 5-pin MAF and 5-pin to 3-pin harness adapter should arrive Tuesday. I released the shop to finish up the wiring from nose to tail, and we'll be installing the PCM on the inside firewall so that it's hidden but accessible. I also released them to install the Vintage Air AC system as well as the dashboard and gauges. We did encounter yet another minor setback. The used racing Tilton Clutch Master Cylinder I supplied started leaking the other day. Thankfully it only leaked inside the cabin, and not on the firewall paint. I sent them a rebuilt kit and that should be rebuilt shortly. I may also have them measure for the front wheel backspacing change next week or the week after, and then send the wheels to Rushforth to be rehooped.

Time for another update. The tilton master has been rebuilt, and all the wiring / pcm / harness came in. The shop is just about done with wiring the entire car, the a/c is 95% done, and the dash has been reinstalled. They are finishing up the wiring, gauges and a/c this week. The battery has been relocated to the trunk, and Optima battery should be here next week. The fuel system components have been ordered and will be installed in the next week or two, and we are modifying the fuel tank we originally built to accommodate the exhaust where we have it going through the frame. Bought the Lokar throttle cable and mounting kit, an EGR plug for the LS1 intake, and had to buy new coils and mounts for the LS1 intake (when I bought the intake, I never bothered to research if the truck coils and mounts would interfere with the fuel rail....which they did). We will also be building our radiator once we finish the fuel tank mods, and will get that installed as well. The front wheels were removed and tires dismounted, and those will be going to Rushforth to change the backspacing. Hopefully, within the next 3-5 weeks, we should be ready to take it to the exhaust shop.

Yes, more work has been completed and the shop is moving along quickly (they tend to be waiting for me, rather than the previous situation where I was waiting on other shops) :)

The re-hooped Rushforth wheels arrived, and I dropped those off at the shop. The wiring is all but completed, they only lack a few minor things like hooking up the radio / speakers / amps which they are getting from me. The A/C system is installed and only needs to be charged with freon. All glass is installed, fuel system is almost finished (I had to modify the custom tank we built to allow it to sit tighter). Along the way I have been adding tasks here and there, and recently gave them the go-ahead to install the sound deadening, carpet and headliner. It was at that point that we discovered that the headliner clips were shot, and we were missing all headliner channels / windlace, so I had to order all new for those. Overall, I am flat out satisfied with the quality of work they are doing, the time frames, and the communication.

Next steps are to finish the fuel system, for me to make our radiator & fan kit, hoses / miscellaneous odds & ends, install the exhaust kit, modify the rear bumper for the exhaust tips, and then it should be ready to test fire.

Here are some recent pictures. Disregard the temporary front wheels, as those were just some rollers while I was waiting for the Rushforth wheels to be rehooped with the modified backspacing.

Went by today to bring the exhaust kit, fuel pump hanger, sound deadening, brake cooling ducts and a bucket of other items. We are getting CLOSE to firing her up. Tires will be re-mounted on the Rushforth wheels in the next week, and the exhaust should be done late next weeks as well. The balance of the sound deadening and carpet will happen in between the other items. Radio and speakers / amps should be installed around the same time. Only pic I took today was the headliner installed. Bad lighting and my camera on my phone has a crap flash, so it doesn't look as good as the installed product.

The fuel system is now completely installed, including the Finch Performance Dual Overflow Canister is installed, bleed line for the clutch installed, exhaust system finished, and carpet / sound deadening is done. Friday I will be dropping off the RnD Fabrication radiator with HD fan & shroud kit (dual spal 12" HD fans), as well as the PS Reservoir with AN fittings. All that is really left is fluids, radiator hoses, and a cold air intake and filter, then we'll be ready to fire it for the first time. It'll be a while before I can swing the door panels and seat upholstery, as well as the Redline Lumtronix (or similar) headlights, but for now at least the car is just about done.

More progress as of Friday. I dropped off the radiator with fans, the PS reservoir and a few other items. Got a short list of parts I need to find in the pile, and a few more minor items to buy, and we'll be just about ready to fire it for the first time. Got a chance to sit in the seat and it felt perfect. The seat is ugly as sin with the current worn upholstery, but I'll fix that after its running and driving. Probably another 1-2 weeks and we'll get to hear it run for the first time. Here are a few shots from Friday:

fronts have 6.5" BS and the rears are 4.625" BS. The rear axle is a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer, and is 1/4" wider on each end (1/2" overall). Mine also have a GM pattern up front and a Ford pattern in the back.

Finally, after 5 years, I got to drive my car! Of course, it only has a not-so-great base tune, but I did put about a mile on it driving through my neighborhood. Even with a bad tune, that thing has gobs of power! It will be going back to the shop in about 3-4 weeks to have the repaired temp and fuel gauges reinstalled, as well as to dial in a few items. As soon as that is done, it is off to the dyno tuner to get dialed in. Then, back to the buffer / polisher to get the hood knocked out and the rest of the body retouched. After that, it'll be time to get some miles on her.

Dyno came back as 362 at the tires. Not bad for a truck engine with a mild cam! Should be ready to bring back on Friday, and then more work to be done getting it closer to road-ready. Have to check some wiring on the Halo's as I think it may be hooked up to the wrong spot and draining the battery.

I picked up Sabre from LSXperts this past Friday, and got to drive it a couple miles. The power is incredible, and the short-throw T56 is awesome. We did find that there is an electrical drain somewhere, and I had an Optima that wouldn't hold a charge. I replaced the battery and still have the drain, so time to start chasing it down. The PS pump needs to be bled again as it was making some noise, and the rear end had some noise when turning (have to verify that the shop used LSD additive, as that may be the issue). Also having an issue where the throttle jumps to around 2,500-3k rpm and sticks for a few, and the tuner thought it may be the ported tbody or the TPS causing it, so have to look into those as well. But I will say I love this car and WOW the tune made it fun!

agreed. Would love to, but you have several years more seat time than I do :) Not really, I've only been able to race 2-3 times per year since leaving GA. Life is way too busy and the events are too far away once you add up entrance fees and travel expenses. You guys have the advantage, there are so many race venues within a few hours of you guys. In Utah it's pretty much drive 6 hours to SoCal for occasional big events and I can run to Vegas (2 hours away) to get a handful of SCCA laps in between watching a bunch of imports do their thing. I really need to move back to the eastern half of the country...

Looks like we're still chasing electrical issues, as there is still a drain. We'll be tackling that in the next week or three, along with raising the front end up for a while (smacked the pan on my driveway and on a raised hump. I'm looking at one of the Holley pans with the separate baffle kit, as that should get me around 3-4" more clearance. Just don't want to pull the engine yet, may save that for sometime next year. This past weekend I picked up some black leather seats that were basically the same as the junky white ones, but they look better. Only real difference is the driver side has an airbag on the outside left of the upper (which I deployed at the bone yard using some wires and a power tool battery....that was fun), which I didn't want, but for $35 a seat, it will buy me time until I can find a manual black leather driver seat without airbag. I have to get a passenger side mount at another yard in the next week from a different model to fit the mounts on the floor so I can install them. Got a spot scheduled back at the shop to fix a few issues in about 2-3 weeks, and should get some seat time after that.

Spent a little time on the seats yesterday. The seats are from a 6th gen (99-05) Monte Carlo, and the bases are manual sliders from a 91-92 Firebird. The floor was modified in that two straight pieces of steel were mounted to the floor with welded / captive nuts under the steel. That allows the Firebird mounts to be bolted directly, and then I can run the Monte Seats (had to drill 2 small holes in the front of the seat chassis), or any Firebird / Grand Prix / etc. I will eventually either have these recovered, or find some perfect condition Monte seats to install. They are damn comfortable seats with good padding, headrests, and in addition to having long sliders (great for tall guys like me) they also have a separate lever on the Firebird base that allows you to tilt the seat bottom up or down with several positions available.

gone as far as I can with that electrical issue, it's going back to the shop. Also, found that the pan hits all the time and adjusting the front will give a little more clearance, but I don't like the stance as much. So I ordered the Holley low profile pan and baffle, and will have the shop install that as well while they have it. Plus, that'll be a good time to get the parking brake system finished, as well as a few other odds and ends.

The car is back in the shop and they finally figured out what was causing my electrical drain, the alternator. We are fixing that, and the oil pan is being swapped out, and then a few other odds and ends are being finished so that it will be roadworthy. My guess is 3 or 4 weeks and I should have it back, hopefully sooner and then I can start getting a few miles on it and plan something.

She's ALIVE! Picked the car up friday afternoon, and proceeded to beat the snot out of it for about 85 miles of gear slammin fun! The Ridetech suspension is absolutely amazing, and I could NOT be happier!!! The stance is perfect, it rides great, and handles like nothing else I've driven. Took it to a local show saturday morning, and after hanging out for a few hours I had to leave before the show was over. Turns out it was selected for Director's Choice as the winner, but since I wasn't there it went to another attendee (fine by me, I'm not much for trophies at car shows). I have a few small bugs to work out (couple rattles, idle issue, fuel fill issue, etc) but they are minor. Now just to start getting some serious seat time.

Wow, what absolutely awesome build..all the heartache, headache,loss, and finally success. Looks amazing! I am looking forward to seeing the lighting front and rear. The tails are on my list, and headlights I think I'm gonna go black housing. Where did you get, or modify the front turn signal lights, or are they not functional, or driving lights? Tears ago when we built our Olds Alero show car, we did 78 trans am fender vents dropped in on each side of a custom cowl hood, and we pondered on doing that to our 71 cutlass, but havent decided anything. Right now she's just a cruiser with dreams of being a budget pro touring car..lol

Thanks, it's been quite a ride. On the signals, we used RedLine Lumtronix (http://haloheadlights.co/), and they have integrated signals built into the LED headlights. The original turn signal openings in the bumper are now fresh air ducts to the front brakes (with tubing and molded ducts).

It's more than that. I built the car to be able to drive to and from long events, autocross all day, run through the curvy mountain roads, and generally beat the snot out of. Knowing what I was going to use it for, I knew that there is the very likely possibility of breaking parts. Rather than spend 3k on an axle and have it break, then have to get a tow home that could be from several hundred miles away, I can now break an axle shaft and go to any local bone yard / pull-a-part / craigslist, and within a VERY short amount of time, find a used matching Ford Explorer 8.8 axle shaft that will slide right in, have no modifications required, and everything I have will bolt right up. Can't do that with a Moser / Strange / etc. axle. Now I do realize that each big-buck axle has it's own advantages, and those companies make some GREAT products. But it wasn't what I wanted on this build. I wanted something I could find easily anywhere I go, find it for cheap, and not have to do any mods to get me back on the road quickly. As for making it easier to sell the wheels.....with what those wheels cost, and how much I LOVE them, they will never be sold. Having two different lug patterns front to rear doesn't matter at all to me :)

Dory Blue. Maybe Muppet Mauve ;) It's a factory brown from a mid-teen's Ford. 100% a factory color, no special mixing or codes. The yellow on the hood and the wheels is a early to mid 2000's Toyota Venza factory color as well. Again, very easy to fix / replicate if needed, and no funky color codes & mixture percentages to have to remember.

Rather than spend 3k on an axle and have it break, then have to get a tow home that could be from several hundred miles away, I can now break an axle shaft and go to any local bone yard / pull-a-part / craigslist, and within a VERY short amount of time, find a used matching Ford Explorer 8.8 axle shaft that will slide right in, have no modifications required, and everything I have will bolt right up. Can't do that with a Moser / Strange / etc. axle. Now I do realize that each big-buck axle has it's own advantages, and those companies make some GREAT products. But it wasn't what I wanted on this build. I wanted something I could find easily anywhere I go, find it for cheap, and not have to do any mods to get me back on the road quickly. As for making it easier to sell the wheels.....with what those wheels cost, and how much I LOVE them, they will never be sold. Having two different lug patterns front to rear doesn't matter at all to me :)


Dory Blue. Maybe Muppet Mauve ;) It's a factory brown from a mid-teen's Ford. 100% a factory color, no special mixing or codes. The yellow on the hood and the wheels is a early to mid 2000's Toyota Venza factory color as well. Again, very easy to fix / replicate if needed, and no funky color codes & mixture percentages to have to remember.

Very cool. I hired a guy that makes custom colors for House of Kolor. He did 5 spray outs for $150. I think it was worth it. I was suprised to learn they were all a simple 2 stage, base then clear. Yours Looks good!

Finally got her out of storage and hit a show & a cruise last weekend. As I drive off (and with a little spirited driving), I realized the temp was climbing up so I pulled over, and looks like the shop that finished up the install had a slight error on the wiring for the fans. They wired both the Spal HD 12" fans in series and used a common ground with a 16ga wire. Needless to say, two fans that pull 60a each at start up were more than that tiny single wire could handle. I nursed it home and installed two separate grounds temporarily with 12ga wire (all I had available) which is better, but will fix them correctly with dual 10ga or 8ga grounds with Weatherpak ends on them. Other than that little hiccup, just an absolute blast to drive!
